Newcastle United vs Manchester City match preview

The tie of the round, almost inarguably, comes from Tyneside, where one of the favourites to win this season’s EFL Cup will fall at the first hurdle.

Manchester City have very much been the Carabao Cup kings in the last decade, winning six of the last ten finals, including a streak of four successive triumphs between 2018 and 2021.

This season, Pep Guardiola’s team continue to be unstoppable, making it a perfect six wins out of six in the Premier League on Sunday, swatting aside Nottingham Forest 2-0 at the Etihad.

Phil Foden and Erling Braut Håland both on target early on meaning, even after Rodri was sent off less than 60 seconds into the second half, the Sky Blues were comfortably able to hold Forest at arms-length.

The Citizens haven’t crashed out of the League Cup this early since 2012, dumped out by Aston Villa back then, but could this extremely tough draw see that fact change?

Newcastle meantime got all the way to the final of this competition last season, their first major final for 24 years, although they ultimately left Wembley disappointed, beaten 2-0 by Manchester United.

It’s fair to say, Eddie Howe’s team could hardly be coming into this tie in more confident mood, having smashed Sheffield United 8 (eight) nil at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, Sven Botman, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almirón, Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak all scoring.

This is the first time in 34 years that eight different players have scored for the same team in an English top-flight game, dating back to Liverpool’s 9-0 victory over Crystal Palace in September 1989.

That’s made it back-to-back league wins for the Toon Army, who had lost three on the spin beforehand, including a 1-0 defeat at the Etihad in August.

Given their 68-year domestic trophy draught, the Magpies will not want to bin off the League Cup, despite having to balance Champions League commitments, with Paris Saint-Germain visiting next Wednesday.

Newcastle though have only won two of their last 35 meetings with Manchester City, although they did prevail when the pair most-recently met in this tournament, a 2-0 victory nine seasons ago.

So, will the Toon Army roar their team to victory at St James’ Park, or will the eight-time winners leave Tyneside in the hat for the fourth round draw?

Newcastle United team news

Harvey Barnes hobbled off after just 12 minutes on Sunday, and is now set to spend months on the sidelines, which is a blow.

For this one, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall could make his full debuts at full-back, while Martin Dúbravka is likely to come in for Nick Pope on goal.

With both Joe Willock and Joelinton sidelined, Elliot Anderson is set to keep his place in midfield.

Having scored four times this season, Callum Wilson could lead the line, although Alexander Isak isn’t a bad alternative is he?

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Dúbravka; Livramento, Lascelles, Burn, Hall; S Longstaff, Tonali, Anderson; Murphy, Gordon, Wilson.

Manchester City team news

Pep Guardiola has already stated that he believes this game is less important than Man City’s upcoming fixtures against Wolves, RB Leipzig and then Arsenal.

With Rodri now commencing his three-match ban, Guardiola confirmed that Kalvin Phillips will start, doing so for just the fifth time, in any competition, since arriving for £50 million 14 months ago.

Elsewhere, John Stones, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne are out injured, while Jack Grealish and Mateo Kovačić are edging back to full fitness.

Stefan Ortega Moreno will get the nod in goal while, having come off the bench against Crvena zvezda last Tuesday, could 20 year old Oscar Bobb start for the very first time?

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Ortega; Lewis, Akanji, Aké, Gómez; Phillips, Nunes, Bobb, Foden, Doku; Álvarez.
