Match preview

After a thrilling 2-2 draw in South Wales, there must be a winner this time as Leeds and Cardiff reconvene in West Yorkshire.

Ten days ago, the Bluebirds looked set to claim a Premier League scalp, leading 2-0 at half time, with Jaden Philogene and Sheyi Ojo on target.

However, Rodrigo quickly halved the deficit before, with ten to play, Leeds were awarded a penalty and Joel Bagan was sent off for a handball on the line.

However, Rodrigo failed to equalise from 12 yards, with his spot-kick brilliantly saved by Jak Alnwick.

Nevertheless, Cardiff could not hold on a man light and, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Sonny Perkins flicked home an equaliser.

So, 2-2 it finished at the Cardiff City Stadium, meaning these two must do it all again for a place in round four.

Now with home advantage, Leeds are heavy favourites to advance, not least because they’re from the division above their visitors.

However, Jesse Marsch’s men are not in good form, beaten 2-1 at Villa Park on Friday night, with Patrick Bamford’s first goal since December 2021 unable to spark a comeback.

The Whites are now winless in five Premier League matches, claiming victory in just two of their last 15, so sit 14th, a mere two points clear of danger.

Before hosting Brentford on Sunday, will the 1972 winners march on into the fourth round?

Cardiff City meantime are currently battling against relegation into League One.

The Bluebirds drew 1-1 with Wigan on Saturday, taking the lead through Callum O’Dowda with just eight to play, only for the visitors to equalise in the sixth minute of injury time.

As a result, Mark Hudson’s team are winless in eight Championship matches, so are just one place above the drop zone.

Awaiting the victors of this tie is a trip to third-tier Accrington Stanley in round four in just ten days time.

Will Leeds United prove to be too strong at Elland Road?

Leeds United team news

Jesse Marsch rotated a bit in Cardiff, and is likely to do the same again here.

18 year old Darko Gyabi started for the club for the first time, while Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt and back-up goalkeeper Joel Robles were also given opportunities.

Having recently lost his place at right-back to Luke Ayling in the league, Rasmus Kristensen will be looking to impress.

New signing Maximilian Wöber came on at Villa Park on Friday night, so could make his first start here.

Having come on for 25 minutes, Patrick Bamford will be hoping for more action here, although Joe Gelhardt is likely to lead the line from the start.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Joel; Kristensen, Llorente, Wöber, Firpo; Gyabi, Roca, Harrison, Summerville, Gnonto; Gelhardt.

Cardiff City team news

Despite being sent off in the first tie, young left-back Joel Bagan is available, having served his one-match ban against Wigan.

Cup keeper Jak Alnwick is set to return, as are Callum Robinson in attack and Romaine Sawyers in midfield.

Jaden Philogene and Sheyi Ojo scored against Leeds ten days ago, so can they repeat the trick?

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Alnwick; Ng, Simpson, Nelson, O’Dowda; Sawyers, Ralls, Ojo, Robinson, Philogene; Davies.
