Rangers vs Olympique Lyonnais betting tips: Europa League preview, predictions and odds

Will this be another memorable European night at Ibrox?

Since Steven Gerrard’s arrival in Glasgow, Rangers’ record in European competitions have been outstanding.

They reached the Europa League group stages in each of his first three seasons, getting all the way to the round of 16 in both 2020 and 2021.

The Gers enjoyed knockout phase victories over Braga and Royal Antwerp before their adventures were ended by Bayer Leverkusen and Slavia Praha.

But, this season, they had even loftier ambitions as they entered Champions League qualification for the first time since liquidation.

Ten years to the day after their last qualifier, they took on Malmö at the same venue as they’d gone out exactly a decade earlier.

However, this third qualifying round tie went the same way with the Swedish side winning both legs 2-1.

Nevertheless, the Light Blues bounced back by, narrowly, beating Alashkert in the Europa League play-off round.

Alfredo Morelos got the only goal in the tie before a bore goalless draw at Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium saw them advance.

So, under Gerrard, they’ve now lost just eight of 49 European fixtures, just three of which have been at home.

Will they repeat their runs to the knockout stages and perhaps even beyond this season?

Well, the mood in Glasgow’s West End has improved in recent weeks.

An Old Firm victory over Celtic at the end of August helped lift spirits; Filip Helander’s header the only goal in that one.

Then, on Saturday, Rangers came from behind to beat St Johnstone 2-1 at McDiarmid Park.

Kemar Roofe converting a penalty before a sublime, dipping, long-range James Tavernier winner saw them return to the top of the table.

Now though, the Premiership champions face a huge test.

Will the 50,000+ inside Ibrox roar their side onto victory?

Will Lyon win in Glasgow?

As for Olympique Lyonnais, they are hoping this is the start of a long and successful European campaign.

In their history, they’ve reached four major European semi-finals but have lost in them all.

These came in the 1964 Cup Winners’ Cup, the 2017 Europa League and the Champions League of 2010 and 2020.

In 2019/20, they were beaten 3-0 by Bayern Munich in Lisbon but, following a seventh place finish in the curtailed Ligue 1, failed to qualify for Europe last season.

At the end of the campaign, les Gones finished fourth, thereby missing out on a Champions League spot on the final day by two points.

But, under 2017 Europa League runner-up Peter Bosz, how far will they go this time around?

Lyon made a very poor start to their league campaign this season, failing to win any of their first three fixtures.

This included a defeat to Angers and a 3-3 draw with newly-promoted Clermont Foot, in which Lyon were 3-1 up with ten to play.

But, since then, they’ve won back-to-back games, first beating Nantes 1-0 and then, on Sunday, Strasbourg 3-1.

Moussa Dembélé with a sublime opener in that one at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, his fourth goal already this season.

Given that Paris Saint-Germain have monopoly power on French trophies, Lyon haven’t won any silverware since the 2012 Coupe de France Final.

They are the highest-ranked side entering into the group stages so could the Europa League provide Lyon with a chance for glory?

Sparta Praha and Danish champions Brøndby are also in Group A so these two are the favourites to advance to the knockout stages.

Will Lyon make a winning start at Ibrox?

Alfredo Morelos

Rangers had a Covid-19 outbreak within the squad before the international break which left them depleted for the games against Alashkert and Celtic.

But, they’re clear now and Steven Gerrard’s side is almost back up to full strength.

In goal, Jon McLaughlin has started four of the five domestic games he’s been available for but Allan McGregor will return.

The latter, now 39, started the three fixtures in UEFA qualification before testing positive for the virus and is first-choice in big games.

At the back, Connor Goldson had played all of Rangers’ last 81 matches before missing the win at St Johnstone due to self-isolation.

He’s unlikely to feature so Filip Helander and Leon Balogun will be the centre-back duo.

Calvin Bassey’s excellent performances could see him keep his place at left-back ahead of the previously unquestioned first-pick Borna Barišić.

In midfield, Glen Kamara is available again after serving his UEFA ban during the qualifiers.

So, the Finn will start alongside Steven Davis with Joe Aribo further forward; John Lundstram and Scott Arfield are the alternatives.

Out-wide, Kemar Roofe received a four-match ban for his tackle during the Slavia Prague defeat in March.

But, as this is the Gers’ fifth European game since then, the Jamaican is back and will start wide left.

Ryan Kent will keep his place on the right despite Scott Wright’s promising form.

Rangers’ leading European scorer of all-time Alfredo Morelos will lead the line.

El Búfalo has now scored 25 times for the club in Europe, surpassing Ally McCoist’s record of 21 by netting at Estádio da Luz last season.

Will Morelos fire his team to yet another famous home win in the Europa League?

Peter Bosz will also name a strong side despite the fact he takes his team to Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday night.

Anthony Lopes is firmly the number one goalkeeper; he joined the club 21 years ago when he was just nine years old.

In defence, Emerson Palmieri is on loan from Chelsea and the Euro 2020 winner will start again after his debut at the weekend.

Centre-back Jason Denayer will return to Glasgow; he spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Celtic, winning the Premiership and League Cup.

Alongside, 33 year old Jérôme Boateng could make his full-debut for Lyon after joining on a free from Bayern Munich.

In midfield, the French club have some outstanding talent.

Thiago Mendes will be the more defensive of the trio with Bruno Guimarães getting forward to help Houssem Aouar; three top-class players there.

That’s not even mentioning Rayan Cherki who, at 18 year old, is being touted as a future superstar.

On the right, Xherdan Shaqiri could keep his place after his debut at the weekend in which he provided an assist.

Moussa Dembélé will not be expecting a warm reception upon his return to Scotland.

The centre-forward won two trebles during his two seasons with Celtic, scoring seven goals in nine appearances against Rangers, losing none of them.

Will he help Lyon to a victory at Ibrox on matchday one of this group phase?
