Dinamo Zagreb vs West Ham United: Match preview

Dinamo Zagreb vs West Ham United betting tips: Europa League preview, predictions and odds

ZAGREB, CROATIA – MARCH 18: Mislav Oršić of GNK Dinamo Zagreb celebrates victory with his team mates after the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 Second Leg match between Dinamo Zagreb and Tottenham Hotspur at Stadion Maksimir on March 18, 2021 in Zagreb, Croatia. (Photo by Jurij Kodrun/Getty Images)

After last season’s memorable run, what will this European campaign bring for GNK Dinamo Zagreb?

Despite the fact they’ve now played 343 fixtures in UEFA competition, Dinamo reached a first quarter-final since 1970 in the last campaign.

Wins over Feyenoord, CSKA Moskva, Krasnodar and Spurs saw them reach the Europa League last eight.

The latter was the most memorable, first losing 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before Mislav Oršić’s hat-trick in the return meeting saw them advance.

However, their adventure was ended by eventual winners Villarreal, going down 3-1 over two legs.

This season’s continental campaign began way back on 7 July which, for some context, is the same day England beat Denmark in the semi-finals of Euro 2020.

The Blues breezed through the first two rounds of Champions League qualifying, overcoming Valur Reykjavík 5-2 and then Omonia 3-0.

They found Legia Warszawa a tougher nut to crack but a 1-1 draw in Zagreb was followed by a fantastic 1-0 victory over in the Polish capital.

Thus, GNK Dinamo went into their play-off round tie with FC Sheriff as overwhelming favourites.

However, they were blown away in the first leg in Tiraspol, losing 3-0, with all the goals rapid counter attacks, and couldn’t pull it back at home, drawing 0-0.

Thus, Damir Krznar’s side must settle for a place in the Europa League group stages.

This is GNK Dinamo’s 17th appearance in a UEFA group stage, since their first in 1998, seven of which have been of the Champions League variety.

This has been made possible by the fact they’ve won 15 of the last 16 Croatian titles, only failing in 2016/17 when they finished two points behind Rijeka.

On Saturday, goals from Rasmus Lauritsen and Luka Ivanušec saw the Blues beat Šibenik 2-0, meaning they are already top of the table with 16 points from seven games.

Now, after their memorable run earlier this calendar year, what can Dinamo achieve in this season’s Europa League?

Well, any success will be built upon solid home form.

Since November 2016, they’ve lost just three of 27 home European gamers with only BSC Young Boys, Manchester City and Villarreal leaving Zagreb victorious in this time.

Will the home fans at Stadion Maksimir be celebrating a matchday one win?

Will West Ham start with a win?

As for West Ham United, they’re set to compete in UEFA group stage for the very first time.

The Hammers won the Cup Winners’ Cup back in 1965, beating 1860 Munich at Wembley, before losing to Anderlecht in the final of the same competition 11 years later.

In more recent times, they’ve fallen in Europa League qualifying of 2015 and 2016, crashing out to Astra Giurgiu on both occasions.

The good news is that Astra are not in Europe this season having been relegated to the Romanian second-division last season.

But, having finished sixth in the Premier League last season, the Irons gain direct entry into the group stages this time around.

This was a remarkable achievement for David Moyes’ men who’d finished 16th, five points above danger, just 10 months earlier.

West Ham appear to have carried that form into this season too.

They started with back-to-back wins, 4-2 at Newcastle and 4-1 against Leicester, before playing out a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

On Saturday, they were involved in a lively goalless draw at Southampton, in which talisman Michail Antonio was sent off, for two yellows, in stoppage time.

The new Jamaica international seeing red less than 24 hours after being named the Premier League’s player of the month for August.

He’ll be suspended for Sunday’s home fixture against Manchester United; a big blow.

But, before then, can Moyes’ men start their European campaign with a victory?

Genk from Belgium and traditional Austrian giants Rapid Wien are also in Group H, which looks very open.

In the new-look Europa League, the group winners qualify to the round of 16 whilst the runners-up advance to preliminary knockout round.

Also, the third-place finishers drop into the Europa Conference League so, West Ham would really have to have a nightmare not to be in Europe in February.

Will the Hammers be happy after this one in Croatia’s capital?

Damir Krznar has been GNK Dinamo’s Head Coach since March after previous manager, Zoran Mamić, was imprisoned for four years for embezzlement.

His squad has been somewhat weakened this summer by the sales of centre-back Joško Gvardiol to RB Leipzig and midfielder Lovro Majer to Rennes.

Krznar rotated his squad heavily at the weekend but his big stars, including goalkeeper Dominik Livaković, will return.

Stefan Ristovski will be recalled at centre-back alongside experienced Frenchman Kévin Théophile-Catherine.

In this 4-4-2 shape, the midfield duo of Josip Mišić and Marko Tolić are going to be key to Dinamo’s success.

Out-wide, Mislav Oršić is a danger man, as Tottenham found out when they visited Zagreb in March.

The 28 year old has had a curious career.

He played in Asia for three years, representing Jeonnam Dragons, Chángchūn Yàtài and Ulsan Hyundai, before joining Dinamo in 2018.

Up front, Croatian internationals Bruno Petković and Duje Čop will look to link-up and fire their side to victory.

Čop rejoined the club this summer on a free transfer from Standard Liège but is yet to score for his new employers.

Will that change in a home win here?

As for West Ham United, despite the fact they face Man United in less than three days time, David Moyes surely won’t rotate too much for this tough fixture.

Although, there might be a change in goal with Łukasz Fabiański rotated out and Alphonse Areola, who’s on loan from PSG, given his debut.

At centre-back, Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson started together at the weekend.

But, Issa Diop and Kurt Zouma could come in here, the latter would be making his debut after a £30 million move across London from Chelsea.

West Ham’s recent success has been built upon the strong central-midfield partnership of Tomáš Souček and Declan Rice.

That’s unlikely to be broken up here by either club captain Mark Noble or Alex Král, who signed from Spartak Moskva on deadline day.

This is Noble’s last season before retiring so he’ll be hoping to feature in this European campaign, thereby adding to his 528 appearances for the club.

Further forward, another new signing, Nikola Vlašić, could make his full-debut after coming off the bench on Saturday.

He’s joined from CSKA Moskva, with whom he scored 33 goals, one of which was a winner against Real Madrid.

The Croat could start in his native country, flanked by Jarrod Bowen and Pablo Fornals.

This would see Saïd Benrahma join Manuel Lanzini and perennial sub Andriy Yarmolenko on the bench.

Michail Antonio, as ever, will lead the line, although he’ll be suspended at the weekend.

Will West Ham start this Group H campaign with a victory?
