It’s safe to say, all is not well at Celtic right now.

Last season, they blew the chance to win an unprecedented tenth league title in-a-row, eventually finishing an embarrassing 25 points behind Rangers.

But, thanks to Scotland’s improved UEFA Association Coefficient Ranking, they still get a chance to qualify for the Champions League.

However, getting through the Main Path will not be easy by any stretch of the imagination and Celtic are not in a good place ahead of this crucial tie.

On Saturday, in the Celts’ final pre-season friendly before this, they were beaten 1-0 by Preston North End in a very lifeless performance.

New Head Coach Ange Postecoglou will take charge of the Hoops for the first time in a competitive game in this one.

The 55 year old has an impressive CV, winning the A-League with Brisbane Roar, the Asia Cup in charge of Australia and the 2019 J1 League as Yokohama F. Marinos Head Coach.

However, he’s walked into a total shambles.

Postecoglou has hardly got any senior players available for a variety of reasons.

Nevertheless, this is a massive game and 9,000 supporters will be back in Celtic Park, the venue’s biggest crowd since 7 March 2020.

The winners of this tie will advance to the Champions League Third Qualifying Round and face either PSV Eindhoven or Galatasaray.

The loser meanwhile drops into the Europa League Third Qualifying Round to meet Czech side FK Jablonec.

Will a depleted Celtic claim a first leg victory at home?

Will Midtjylland win in Glasgow?

Midtjylland will be looking to take advantage of their host’s problems.

The Wolves were only founded in 1999 but have won three Superligaen titles, lifting the trophy in 2015, 2018 and 2020.

Last season, they finished second, one point behind champions Brøndby.

This domestic consistency has helped the Danish club enjoy some relative success in European competitions too.

They made their group phase debut in 2015, beating Southampton in the play-off round en route to the Europa League round of 32 where Manchester United ended their adventure.

Last season, Midtjylland made their Champions League group phase debut, beating Ludogorets Razgrad, BSC Young Boys and Slavia Praha in the qualifiers.

They went on to finish bottom of Group D, below Liverpool, Atalanta and Ajax.

Nevertheless, their record in qualifiers is impressive, winning 11 of their last 17 ties.

The new Danish Superligaen season started at the weekend and Bo Henriksen’s side got the campaign up and running on Friday night.

However, they slipped to a surprise 2-1 home defeat to Odense Boldklub, a side who only finished two places above the relegation zone last year.

Will Midtjylland get back on track with a European victory in Glasgow?

Celtic are really short of players coming into this huge game for multiple reasons.

First, Jonjoe Kenny, Diego Laxalt, Shane Duffy and Mohamed Elyounoussi have all returned to their parent club’s after loan spells.

Also, after 14 years, 611 appearance and 22 trophies, Scott Brown has left to join Aberdeen on a bosman.

The final group are those who have one year left on their contract and seemingly have no intention of playing for Celtic again.

This applies to Kristoffer Ajer, Ryan Christie and Olivier Ntcham while Odsonne Édouard also wants out but, unlike the others, did appear in Saturday’s friendly.

With this in mind, Ange Postecoglou will have to put out a weak side for his first game.

Uncertainty continues with relation to Celtic’s goalkeeper.

Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain were given 45 minutes each at the weekend and it’s anyone’s guess who will start here.

In defence is where Celtic are really short, exacerbated by Christopher Jullien’s injury that’ll keep him out for the rest of 2021; Nir Bitton’s whereabouts are unknown.

21 year old Osaze Urhoghide, who’s joined from Sheffield Wednesday, will be thrown in at the deep-end.

Alongside him is likely to be Stephen Welsh with Anthony Ralston at right-back; they’ve made 22 and 20 senior appearances for the club respectively.

Celtic’s squad is so stretched that Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo will be on the bench; he was shipped off to İstanbul Başakşehir last season after violating Covid-19 guidelines.

In midfield, new club captain Callum McGregor will start, likely with Ismaila Soro alongside and David Turnbull ahead; a strong tiro.

Another new recruit from Sheffield Wednesday, Liam Shaw, and Tom Rogic are the alternatives.

Out-wide, Celtic have been busy in the transfer market.

Kyōgo Furuhashi has joined from Viessl Kōbe, but isn’t in the country yet, but Liel Abada is available after moving from Maccabi Petah Tikva.

The Israeli looked lively off the bench against Preston, so much so that he could start here.

James Forrest, if fit, will be on the other flank; Mikey Johnston and Karamoko Dembélé have picked up injuries in pre-season.

Up front, Odsonne Édouard is still at the club so could start; if he doesn’t it’ll be Albian Ajeti.

Can Celtic pull off a shock win?

As for Midtjylland, their team is less all over the place after kicking off the league season on Friday night.

Jonas Lössl is an experienced goalkeeper in their ranks, joining earlier this year after spells in England with Everton and Huddersfield.

At right-back will be another new arrival Henrik Dalsgaard who’s singed after helping Brentford win promotion to the Premier League in May.

Midtjylland’s captain is Erik Sviatchenko who made 63 appearances for Celtic between 2016 and 2018, winning two league titles and three cups.

23 year old Evander is their creative midfield threat; since joining from Vasco da Gama, he’s been directly involved in 49 goals in 103 appearances.

Out-wide, Pione Sisto has rejoined the club after four years in Spain with Celta de Vigo; he scored in their league fixture on Friday night.

Midtjylland will be without their main front man though as Sory Kaba has reportedly refused to travel to Glasgow in an attempt to force a move away.

So, Júnior Brumado will lead the line, as he did against OB.

Will the Danish side leave Celtic Park in pole position to advance?
