Can Bayer Leverkusen continue their impressive form in this season’s UEFA Europa League?

Die Werkself are currently top of Group G with ten points from a possible 12.

Of course, back on matchday two, they destroyed Celtic in Glasgow, winning 4-0; Piero Hincapié, Florian Wirtz, Lucas Alario and Amine Adli all scored.

Since, they’ve wrestled supremacy at the top of the standings away from then fellow run-away leader Real Betis.

First, the two drew at Estadio Benito Villamarín with Robert Andrich’s late deflected shot snatching a point.

14 days later though, Bayer hammered Betis in Germany, enjoying another 4-0 victory, with Moussa Diaby scoring twice.

Thus, Gerardo Seoane’s side are three points clear at the top of the table.

A point here would guarantee a top two finish while a win for Leverkusen would rubber stamp first place and a spot in the round of 16.

Bayer Leverkusen won this competition in 1988, coming from 3-0 down to beat Espanyol on penalties in the two-legged final.

Since though, they’ve lifted just a solitary DFB-Pokal, finishing as Bundesliga runners-up or losing in a cup final ten times in the subsequent seasons.

So, based on their form in the group stages so far, die Werkself could be targeting the Europa League as they aim to end their 29-year trophy draught.

At the weekend, Adli got the only goal in a nervy 1-0 home victory over VfL Bochum.

That ended a run of four Bundesliga games without a win but did lift Leverkusen back up to fourth, a point above Union Berlin and Wolfsburg.

Will the German side be far too strong for Celtic again, this time at BayArena?

Can Celtic win in Germany for the first time ever?

As for Celtic, it’s been a Europa League group stage of two thirds so far but it’s in these final two matches where their destiny will be decided.

First, despite leading 2-0 in Southern Spain, Celtic were beaten 4-3 by Real Betis on matchday one, conceding four times in 21 minutes.

Then, they suffered that aforementioned 4-0 hammering at home to Leverkusen.

That is Celtic’s second-heaviest European home defeat, from 208 outings, behind only Paris Saint-Germain’s 5-0 win at Parkhead in 2017.

But, since then, Ange Postecoglou’s side have stabilised and got their European campaign up and running.

First, in the traditional kick off time of 3:30 on a Tuesday afternoon, the Hoops beat Ferencváros 2-0 at home.

Jota’s sumptuous through-ball played in Kyōgo Furuhashi for the first before David Turnbull scrambled in a second.

Then, on matchday four, the Celts beat the Hungarian champions again, this time battling to a 3-2 victory in Budapest.

Kyōgo opener the scoring just three minutes in at Groupama Aréna before Jota’s long-range strike and Liel Abada’s cool finish secured the win.

This means, at worst, the Bhoys will finish third in this group, thereby dropping into the UEFA Europa Conference League.

But, as they’re now just one point behind Real Betis, there’s a chance Celtic will continue in the Europa League.

With Béticos visited Parkhead on the sixth and final matchday, the Hoops need a result in Germany to stay, at least, three points behind them.

At the weekend, the Celts booked their place in the first cup final of the season.

It was a hard-fought affair but James Forrest got the only goal in the second half as they beat St Johnstone 1-0 at Hampden.

They’ll now return to the National Stadium on 19 December to face Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup Final.

This means, in all competitions, Postecoglou’s team are unbeaten in nine matches, winning eight, dating back to Leverkusen’s visit to Glasgow.

Will the green and white positivity continue in North Rhine-Westphalia?

Gerardo Seoane’s plan will surely be to win this one, wrap up top spot and then rest and rotate away to Ferencváros.

That isn’t good news for Celtic.

Finland’s number one Lukáš Hrádecký will continue in goal; he’s kept 43 clean sheets in 145 appearances since joining Leverkusen in 2018.

In front of him was something akin to a 4-4-2 on Saturday but the more usually 4-2-3-1 is likely to be deployed here.

Jonathan Tah and Edmond Tapsoba are a very solid centre-back duo.

A familiar face will start at right-back: Jeremie Frimpong made 51 appearances in green and white, winning all three domestic trophies.

On the other side, Mitchel Bakker is injured so Daley Sinkgraven will keep his place.

In midfield, Kerem Demirbay is suspended after getting sent off on matchday four while Julian Baumgartlinger and Charles Aránguiz are injured.

So, Exequiel Palacios is expected to come in alongside Robert Andrich.

Further forward, Florian Wirtz became the Bundesliga’s youngest ever-goalscorer, netting aged 17 years and 34 days against Bayern in June 2020.

Since, he’s scored a further 15 goals for the first team and is a world star in the making.

However, in attack, they’re without Patrik Schick, the scourge of Scotland in the summer, as he’s injured.

So, 21 year old Amine Adli will lead the line, looking to add to his two goals in his last three appearances.

Ange Postecoglou meanwhile, in most areas, has very limited options so there isn’t much scope for rotation.

His squad is going to be stretched to the limit because this is the first of 12 matches between now and the Old Firm on 2 January.

That’s 12 games in 38 days to be exact.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart has started all 23 matches since his debut away to Jablonec, keeping 11 clean sheets.

The defence will remain the same as Saturday with Stephen Welsh partnering Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Christopher Jullien and Greg Taylor are long-term absentees but Carl Starfelt could be back in the squad; he’s been out since 30 October.

Likewise, in midfield, Tom Rogic went off against Hibs on 27 October but the Australian could be back in contention soon.

Without him, Nir Bitton sits in front of the defence with Callum McGregor given licence to get forward.

In attack is the only area Postecoglou does have some decisions to make.

James Forrest missed almost all of last season due to an ankle injury, but came off the bench to get the winner on Saturday.

He could come in for Liel Abada on the right, completing the front three alongside Kyōgo Furuhashi and Jota.

Mikey Johnston, who too is back after a long spell on the sidelines, and Albian Ajeti will be on the bench.

Giorgos Giakoumakis, who’s hardly played at all this season due to injury, is unavailable again
