Denmark vs Northern Ireland match preview

After a rare defeat in qualifying last time out, will Denmark get back on track this month?

On matchday one, de Rød-Hvide made the perfect start to this campaign, beating Nordic rivals Finland 3-1 at home, with Rasmus Højlund bagging a first international hat-trick.

Three days later, it looked like being more of the same, with the Danes 2-0 up in Nur-Sultan while Højlund was on fire once more, scoring twice.

But then, against all odds, Kazakhstan pulled off an astonishing comeback, scoring thrice in the final 16 minutes to snatch the most unexpected of 3-2 wins.

Before this, Kasper Hjulmand’s side had lost just one of 28 qualifiers, so to say this defeat at Astana Arena was a surprise would be an understatement.

This week, with a trip to Slovenia to come on Monday night, Denmark are targeting maximum points that would see them reclaim the summit of Group H.

On matchday one, in Michael O’Neill’s first game back in charge, the Green and White Army did celebrate a 2-0 victory over San Marino, in which Dion Charles scored both in Serravalle.

However, they could not back it up because, three days later, Finland left Windsor Park 1-0 winners.

Overall, since starting Euro 2020 qualifying with four successive wins, Northern Ireland have won only four of 28 competitive internationals, these wins coming against Lithuania, Kosovo and San Marino.

So, a routine home win is highly likely at Parken.

Denmark team news

All eyes will be on Rasmus Højlund once again, after the Atalanta striker scored five goals in March’s two qualifiers.

Simon Kjær will win his 125h cap, now just four behind Peter Schmeichel’s long-standing record.

Northern Ireland team news

Northern Ireland travel to Copenhagen without their all-time record appearance holder Steven Davis as well as striker Josh Magennis.

Jonny Evans though is fit, so will start at centre-back, earning his 101st cap.
