Slavia Prague vs Dnipro-1 match preview

Slavia Prague come into this tie as favourites to prevail, so can they establish an unassailable first leg lead?

The Slavists have been very impressive in Europe in recent seasons, reaching the Europa League quarter-finals in both 2019 and 2021, no side from outside a ‘top five’ league can boast anything similar.

Overall, JindÅ™ich TrpiÅ¡ovský’s team have featured in a UEFA group stage in each of the last six seasons, including the Europa Conference League 12 months ago.

However, having finished second in last season’s Czech First League, below fierce rivals Sparta Prague, finishing on the same number of points, Slavia must win two qualifiers just to get back into the Europa League.

Dnipro-1 meantime were recently dumped out of the Champions League by Panathinaikos, comfortably beaten 3-1 in Košice, before earning a credible 2-2 draw in Athens last mid-week.

Last season, Dnipro, who are a phoenix club, made their debut in a UEFA group stage, getting all the way to the Europa Conference League knockout stages.

A home win seems very likely at Fortuna Arena.

The winners of this tie will take on Zorya Luhansk in the UEFA Europa League play-offs, which could lead to an all-Ukrainian affair which would be… weird!

The losers drop into the Europa Conference League play-off round, where they’ll meet the losers of Lech Poznań vs Spartak Trnava.
