Hibernian vs Luzern match preview

Hibernian have only once won multiple European ties in the same season since 1972, achieving this in 2018, seeking to emulate that achievement here.

A fortnight ago, Hibs were on the wrong end of, possibly, the most embarrassing result in Scottish football history, defeated 2-1 by Inter Club d’Escaldes at Estadi Comunal d’Andorra la Vella.

Nevertheless, Lee Johnson’s side roared back to demolish their Andorran opponents 6-1 at Easter Road a week later.

Martin Boyle and Josh Campbell both bagging braces, while Christian Doidge and Élie Youan were also on target and, by the end, they could’ve scored ten.

Then, in Sunday, Hibs were involved in a very eventful Premiership opener, welcoming St Mirren to Leith.

They found themselves 2-0 down early, only for quick-fire goals from Adam Le Fondre and then Doidge to pull it back to 2-2.

Safe to say, Johnson’s team will need to defender better than that to get any sort of positive result in this tie.

As for Luzern, before this season, they’d won just one of ten European ties in the last 31 years, this coming against KÍ Klaksvík in 2019.

Despite this, Mario Frick’s team knocked out Djurgårdens IF in the previous round, overcoming a side who’d reached the Europa Conference League round of 16 just last season.

Kemal Ademi and Jakub Kadák on target in a shock 2-1 victory in Stockholm, before Marco Burch broke the deadlock in last Thursday’s 1-1 draw at Swissporarena.

Domestically, die Leuchten have made a mixed start to the new Swiss Super League season.

At the weekend, Luzern were beaten 2-1 by St. Gallen, despite actually taking the lead at Kybunpark.

This leaves them on four points, having previously beaten newly-promoted Stade Lausanne Ouchy at home, also drawing 0-0 with Winterthur at Stadion Schützenwiese on the opening weekend.

So, this Luzern team are far from impenetrable, but Hibs will still need to be at their best to get through, surely needing to win this first leg at Easter Road, ahead of next Thursday’s trip to Lucerne.

The winners of this tie will take on Aston Villa in the UEFA Europa Conference League play-offs.

Hibernian team news

Last Thursday against Inter Club d’Escaldes, Hibs had a bit of a goalkeeping crisis.

David Marshall picked up an injury in the warm-up, before Jojo Wollacott, on his debut pulled a muscle during the second half, meaning 20 year old Maksymilian Boruc came on and donned the gloves.

Thankfully, Marshall was fit enough to start against St Mirren, so the veteran will be in goals for this one.

Martin Boyle was electric a week ago, scoring twice in the first half, while Christian Doidge’s two goals in two games will see him continue to lead the line,

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Marshall; Delferriere, Fish, Hanlon, Stevenson; Newell, Doyle-Hayes, Campbell, Boyle, Youan; Doidge.

Luzern team news

Mario Frick made six changes for Sunday’s trip to St. Gallen, resting many of his key players with this trip to Edinburgh in mind.

Max Meyer may be a familiar name; a former wunderkind when he was at Schalke, he then went to Crystal Palace and didn’t play much, since bouncing around Köln, Fenerbahçe and Midtjylland.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Loretz; Dorn, Burch, Beka, Frýdek; Jashari, Meyer, Beloko, Kadák, Okou; Ademi.
