Match preview

A Sunderland outfit with sights set firmly on the promotion playoff places will act as hosts, in a Championship showdown with struggling Reading at the Stadium of Light this Saturday, February 11th.

Beginning with the former, Sunderland have endured something of a tough time of things over the course of the last month.

A head-turning downing of high-flying Middlesbrough aside, the Black Cats have notched just a single victory from their last five attempts across all competitions.

This does include a credible FA Cup draw with Fulham, and ensuing exit from the competition at the hands of the top-flight Londoners in midweek, though.

Turning attentions back towards the league, Tony Mowbray’s troops have managed one three-point haul from their last four attempts, with a late Dennis Cirkin equaliser having ensured that they emerged with a share of the spoils at Millwall last time out.

Such hit-and-miss form means that Sunderland have now slipped to 9th in the Championship table.

In the knowledge that a return to winning ways this weekend could guide them back into the playoff positions, though, the Black Cats will no doubt have their sights set firmly on as much in a meeting with a Reading outfit long struggling for form themselves.

The Royals, of course, at one point this season found themselves firmly defying the odds, in the thick of the battle for a top-six finish.

The last couple of months, however, have seen Paul Ince’s men brought back down to earth with a thud.

All told, Reading have managed just one win from their last seven attempts in the Championship.

This came courtesy of a hard-fought downing of Swansea City late last month, with the Berkshire-based club having since pieced together three points from an available 15.

To their credit, the most recent did see Ince and co. showcase at least some semblance of fighting spirit, in recovering from two goals down to eventually bag a share of the spoils in a meeting with promotion-chasing Watford.

But Reading nevertheless remain in a lowly 17th in the standings, potentially set to see their campaign peter out into irrelevancy.

We at 101 are therefore backing Sunderland to ultimately add to the woes of the Royals, come the full-time whistle at the Stadium of Light on Saturday evening.
