Match preview

Two sides in the midst of fine recent stretches of form are set to lock horns in a Championship clash at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, February 18th.

The matchup in question will see Sunderland act as hosts, in a meeting with a resurgent Bristol City.

Beginning with the former, Sunderland have established themselves as one of the standout sides in England’s 2nd tier over the course of recent weeks.

In fact, dating back to mid-December, the Black Cats have fallen to just a solitary defeat from their last nine league fixtures.

More recently, Tony Mowbray’s troops have rattled off ten points from an available twelve, notching three wins from four, the latest of which came in dominant fashion in midweek.

After making the trip to London for a meeting with Queens Park Rangers, Luke O’Nien’s first-half opener was added to late on courtesy of a Jack Clarke brace, en route to a 3-0 final scoreline.

Having also found the net in both FA Cup 4th round meetings with Fulham, talented youngster Clarke, in turn, has now notched four goals across his last five appearances in all competitions.

And such fine form on Sunderland’s part means that Mowbray and co. have climbed into the thick of the promotion playoff picture, now sitting in 5th spot.

Safe to say, then, that Saturday’s hosts will head into the action at the Stadium of Light confident in their chances of making it four wins from five.

Such a result, however, is unlikely to prove an easy one to come by.

This comes with upcoming opponents Bristol City having proven themselves an altogether tough nut to crack of late.

So recently viewed as serious candidates for the drop, Nigeal Pearson’s men have managed to things around in nothing short of stellar fashion over the course of the last couple of months.

Dating back to the close of 2022, the Robins have remained unbeaten in ten straight fixtures across all competitions.

This stretch includes hugely impressive downings of the likes of West Brom and Norwich, as well as, last time out, a hard-fought stalemate with Wigan Athletic.

Though Sunderland will understandably head into Saturday’s action as favourites to emerge triumphant, we at 101 would therefore not be at all surprised if Bristol frustrate their heavyweight opponents, en route to securing a share of the spoils at the Stadium of Light.
