Match preview

Two sides in the thick of the relegation battle are set to lock horns in a Championship clash at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, January 14th.

The matchup in question will see a Cardiff side desperate for a return to winning ways play host to bottom-of-the-table Wigan Athletic.

Starting with the former, Cardiff, for their part, have found positive results altogether difficult to come by of late.

In fact, dating back to early November, the Bluebirds have failed to emerge victorious from any of their last eight fixtures across all competitions.

On the league front, Mark Hudson’s troops have long struggled to turn stalemate positions into winning ones, stuttering to single-point hauls in four of their last five, en route to a spot in 20th in the Championship table.

Presented with the perfect opportunity to get back on track courtesy of victory in the FA Cup at the weekend, the Welsh giants then surrendered an early two-goal advantage on their way to a 2-2 draw with Leeds United.

And yet, despite such woes, Cardiff will nevertheless head into Saturday’s action in the Welsh capital with sights set firmly on all three points.

This comes with their upcoming opponents currently standing as the worst performing side in England’s 2nd tier.

Stretching back a full three months, Wigan have managed to piece together a grand total of one victory from their last 14 attempts.

Each of the Latics’ last four league outings, meanwhile, have culminated in defeat, as the defensive holes in new boss Kolo Toure’s setup continued to be exploited in ruthless fashion.

Wigan, in turn, find themselves glued to the foot of the Championship table, staring a return to League One square in the face.

And we at 101 do not envision the Latics’ dire situation being at all eased on Saturday afternoon, either.

Instead, we are backing hosts Cardiff to ultimately emerge on the right side of the scoreline, come the full-time whistle at the Cardiff City Stadium.
