Match preview

A Blackpool outfit fresh off the result of the round in the midweek slate of Championship fixtures will be hopeful of making it two wins on the spin when they welcome Coventry City to Bloomfield Road on Saturday, March 18th.

For those who may have missed it, Blackpool proved themselves the headline-grabbers on Tuesday night, in romping to a remarkable downing of Queens Park Rangers.

Owing to goals on the part of all of Jerry Yates, Andy Lyons (2), Curtis Nelson, Jordan Thorniley and Kenny Dougall, the seasiders ran out 6-1 victors in England’s northwest, in a result which could yet prove itself to be a season-altering one.

Mick McCarthy’s troops, of course, remain in the thick of the battle against relegation from England’s 2nd tier, having been condemned to defeat in three of their prior four.

Safe to say, then, that a 2nd successive victory would see Blackpool’s survival hopes afforded a monumental boost.

Such a result, though, in truth, is unlikely to prove a straightforward one to come by.

This comes with the seasiders’ upcoming opponents, Coventry, having not slipped to a single defeat since the beginning of February, a full nine games ago.

The Sky Blues, after a more than shaky patch of form over the early weeks of the new year, have since steadied the ship in altogether impressive fashion.

All told, the club’s last eight have given rise to a quartet of wins, to go along with a quartet of draws.

Most recently, on Tuesday night, Mark Robins’ men were held for a 2nd outing on the bounce, after top scorer Viktor Gyokeres’ opener was cancelled out by a late Kyle McFadzean own goal at bottom-of-the-table Wigan Athletic.

This dealt a fresh blow to Coventry’s promotion hopes, with Robins and co, as a result, sitting in 9th, a full six points adrift of the playoff pace.

And such hit-and-miss efforts on the part of the Sky Blues will no doubt inspire hope on Blackpool’s part when it comes to the chances of an upset on Saturday evening.

We at 101, though, are instead backing an eventual stalemate to play out between the two sides at Bloomfield Road.
