Match preview

Two sides fresh off altogether contrasting results are set to lock horns in a Championship showdown at Ewood Park on Thursday, December 29th.

The clash in question will see promotion-chasing Blackburn Rovers play host to in-form Middlesbrough.

The former, of course, have endured an altogether tough time of things of late.

Blackburn, for their part, remain in the thick of the battle for promotion, sitting third in England’s 2nd tier, behind only runaway leaders Burnley and Sheffield United.

Recent weeks, though, have proven less than fruitful, with Jon Dahl Tomasson’s troops having slipped to four defeats in five across all competitions.

The latest came this past weekend, when Ellis Simms’ injury-time strike condemned Rovers to a morale-sapping 2-1 loss at the hands of Sunderland.

Should Blackburn, in turn, emerge without at least a share of the spoils this Thursday evening, then they will be in real danger of being dragged back into the mire of the top-six battle.

Hopeful of condemning the day’s hosts to a fifth defeat in six, though, will be a Middlesbrough outfit in the midst of an altogether more fruitful stretch of results.

Once viewed as being amongst the favourites for relegation, Boro have turned things around in nothing short of spectacular fashion over recent weeks.

Since the beginning of November, new boss Michael Carrick has guided his side to a head-turning five wins from seven, the latest of which came in dominant fashion last time out.

A meeting with Wigan Athletic at the Riverside Stadium ultimately culminated in a 4-1 triumph, inspired by a Chuba Akpom hat-trick.

Middlesbrough, in turn, have climbed to the heights of mid-table in the Championship, in the knowledge that a sixth win from eight could, remarkably, see them soar into the thick of the promotion playoff picture.

And we at 101 do not view such a scenario as being at all out of the question, with Middlesbrough deserving of their slight favourite status ahead of Thursday’s action kicking into gear at Ewood Park.
