After one of the most controversial VAR calls in Champions League history, Tottenham Hotspur will head to France to take on Marseille knowing that a point will get them into the knockout rounds of the competition ahead of the World Cup break.
As of now, any of the four teams in Group D could move into the knockout stages of the Champions League, with all four sides on two wins each. Spurs are sitting top, however, and two points clear of Marseille. On the other hand, should the north London side lose, they could move into third, given how one of either Eintracht Frankfurt and Sporting Lisbon are going to pick up points.
Spurs fell behind to a goal from former Spurs youth product, Marcus Edwards, in the draw with Sporting last midweek. They managed to get back into the game from a goal through Rodrigo Bentancur, but Harry Kane’s winner in the 95th minute was denied through a VAR call that determined his knee to be offside by the narrowest of margins. Antonio Conte’s men also came back to beat Bournemouth last weekend when Bentancur once again was the difference with a winner in the 3-2 win where Spurs were 2-0 down.
Marseille themselves had to deal with Strasbourg’s comeback result, as Alexis Sanchez and co. led the game before a stunner from Kevin Gameiro saw the points shared. Worse yet for Marseille, they lost to Frankfurt in the last round of Champions League fixtures, while also losing 1-0 to PSG and Lens in the games prior.
It now means four games without a win, and Spurs should fancy themselves to win here.
