Dinamo Zagreb vs AEK Athens match preview

A week later than originally scheduled, the champions of Croatia and Greece will go head-to-head.

Last Tuesday, these two clubs were due to go head-to-head in the first leg at Agia Sophia Stadium.

However, the fixture was postponed on Tuesday morning following a riot featuring both sets of supporters that actually left on AEK fan dead.

Whatever happens on the field, this match will be overshadowed by this incident, but a huge prize is on offer for both teams, who will, belatedly, meet in Athens for the second leg on Saturday night.

In the previous round, GNK Dinamo Zagreb sent out a warning to the rest, demolishing Astana 6-0, with Luka Ivanušec bagging a hat-trick at home, before the Blues won 2-0 in Nur-Sultan last Wednesday.

Having won 17 of the last 18 Croatian titles, Dinamo Zagreb are familiar faces to European football fans, featuring in 16 UEFA group stages since 2004, six of which have come in the Champions League.

AEK Athens meantime start their campaign here, having clinched just a second Greek Super League title in 29 years back in May.

The Yellow-Blacks did feature in the Champions League group phase as recently as 2018, also getting into the Europa League two years later, and will be returning to a group stage of some kind next month.

So, will there be a winner at Stadion Maksimir?

The winners of this tie will take on Royal Antwerp in the UEFA Champions League play-off round.

The losers drop into the UEFA Europa League play-offs, where they’ll face the losers of Sparta Prague vs København.
