Sassuolo have appointed Alberto Aquilani as their new coach.
The former Liverpool midfielder takes over the Serie A side following an impressive spell with Serie B side Catanzaro. He replaces Fabio Grosso, who left Sassuolo to become Fiorentina’s new coach.
Aquilani took charge at Catanzaro in June last year and led them to a fifth-placed finish in Italy’s second tier.
They subsequently reached the final of the Serie B play-offs but missed out on promotion after drawing 2-2 on aggregate with Monza, who were promoted as a result of their higher league position.
The former Italy international, who also had spells with Roma, Juventus and AC Milan in his playing career, now returns to the team for whom he made 16 appearances in a loan spell in 2016-17.
Sassuolo’s vice president Veronica Squinzi said: “It is a welcome return, since as a footballer he wore the black-green jersey in 2017. We have both grown since then and I think that, together, we can write new exciting chapters in the history of our team.”
Having began his coaching career with Fiorentina’s youth set-up, Aquilani was the coach of Pisa for the 2023-24 season.
His first top-flight coaching job sees the 41-year-old inherit a Sassuolo side that finished 11th in Serie A this season.
