Julian Alvarez scored his first home goal of the season as Atletico Madrid beat Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 to move Diego Simeone’s men within two points of LaLiga leaders Barcelona.
Alvarez, who tried to force through a move to Barca in the summer, got off the mark for the campaign in midweek with a goal in the 1-1 Champions League draw at Stuttgart.
And he followed that effort up with a simple finish at the Metropolitano that put the pressure on Barca ahead of their Clasico with Real Madrid on Sunday.
Alvarez turned home from Alejandro Grimaldo’s cross three minutes into the second half, his close-range effort proving decisive as Atletico made it eight wins from 10 to start their league season.
Georges Mikautadze scored a 96th-minute winner as Villarreal won 2-1 at neighbours Valencia.
Pepelu’s emphatic penalty gave Valencia the lead, which looked to have been doubled when Cesar Tarrega fired in after Villarreal failed to clear a corner.
However, that was ruled out for offside and Alexander Freeman then levelled by heading home Sergi Cardona’s cross.
The game looked to have turned back in Valencia’s favour as Pape Gueye was sent off for an elbow on Jose Gaya.
Yet the hosts were also reduced to 10 men when Harvey Elliott received two yellows in succession for dissent, and Villarreal claimed the derby spoils at the death as Alberto Moleiro’s excellent pass was collected by Mikautadze, who emphatically converted to leave Valencia with just six points from 10 games.
Racing Santander beat Espanyol 2-1, and Elche were 3-0 winners at Rayo Vallecano.
Lazio go top, Roma stay unbeaten after thriller
Lazio moved top of Serie A with a 2-1 win over Parma as their city rivals Roma maintained their unbeaten start with a thrilling 3-3 draw at Napoli.
Gustav Isaksen had a first-half goal ruled out for offside for Lazio, but Kenneth Taylor’s effort and an own goal from Diego Carlos proved enough to secure the points.
They are three points ahead of defending champions Inter Milan in the Scudetto race ahead of the Nerazzurri’s clash with Fiorentina on Sunday.
Roma are four points off the pace but, like their arch rivals, are still yet to taste defeat after twice coming from behind to draw with Napoli.
Frank Anguissa’s stunning overhead kick put Napoli in front before their lead was doubled by Scott McTominay when he nodded in on the rebound after seeing an initial close-range header kept out.
But Matias Soule’s fine long-range strike saw Roma pull one back, with Leonardo Balerdi then lashing home a leveller from point-blank range.
McTominay restored Napoli’s lead with an unerring long-distance effort into the bottom-left corner, only for Balerdi to rescue a point by heading home his second.
Elsewhere, Como beat Sassuolo 2-0 and Bologna won at Cagliari by the same scoreline.
Dortmund return to summit
Borussia Dortmund moved back to the summit of the Bundesliga with a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Maximilian Beier was the difference as his 80th-minute goal secured the points, sending Dortmund three clear of Bayern Munich ahead of their meeting with third-placed Freiburg on Sunday.
Romulo Cardoso scored twice as RB Leipzig ran out 4-0 winners over Elversberg, while two penalties from Niklas Fullkrug helped Werder Bremen beat Mainz 3-2.
Paderborn were 1-0 winners over Hamburg, their victory seeing Union Berlin drop into the bottom two after a 1-1 draw at Augsburg in which both teams had a man sent off. Schalke drew 0-0 with Cologne.
In Ligue 1, Paris FC missed the chance to at least temporarily go top of the table as they were beaten 2-1 by Lens.
Florian Thauvin equalised for Lens after being teed up by Thorgan Hazard, with the roles then reversed as the latter fired home from Thauvin’s cross to complete the turnaround.
