England have long been fancied to be one of the teams to beat at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, thanks to their impressive win in the Euros last summer, but a host of injuries to key players means they face a tough challenge if they wish to continue their stunning run of form under Sarina Wiegman.
However they go into the tournament as second favourites owing to their tournament experience, finishing in third place eight years ago and fourth place at France 2019, as well as the 2022 Euros success and a semi-final finish in 2017.
The runaway favourites are undoubtedly USA, who successfully defended their 2015 triumph with a 2-0 win over Netherlands in the final four years ago and are strong favourites to do so again with the likes of Alex Morgan, Lindsay Horan and Julie Ertz still going strong.
Spain are third favourites for the title, ahead of Euros runners-up Germany and France, who also have a solid history in the format. Keep an eye out for Australia too, with Chelsea striker Sam Kerr one of the players poised to make an impact and a recent 2-0 win over England a sign that they could be a force to be reckoned with.

The USA are undoubtedly the team to beat going into the tournament. With such a rich pedigree in world tournaments in recent years they are clear favourites heading into the 2023 Women’s World Cup, but there have been signs that there are weaknesses in their armour.
Three defeats in as many games against England, Spain and Germany – likely to be three of the main challengers – at the end of 2022 has shown that there are weaknesses that can be exploited. However an 80% winning record in World Cups – they have never finished lower than third place – isn’t to be taken lightly.
Aside from European champions England, Australia will be one of the sides to look out for as well after they won 2-0 in London in April, shortly after a win over Spain, another of the fancied teams. Sam Kerr was the star of the show that day and if she hits her straps then she could be one of the players of the tournament.
Spain have shown, with wins over Norway, Japan and USA that they are more than capable of an upset and they will lean heavily on Jennifer Hermoso to score their goals.
