Ross County vs Partick Thistle match preview

After claiming a resounding victory in the first leg at Firhill on Thursday, will Partick Thistle finish the job as they make the long 172 mile journey north to the Highlands?

In mid-week, these two clashed in Glasgow, and pretty much everything went right on the night for Partick.

The Jags took the lead after just nine minutes, Aidan Fitzpatrick scoring a beautiful curler, before 16 year old Dylan Smith was sent off for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, tripping up Fitzpatrick.

Now up against ten-men, the home side doubled their lead in first half stoppage time, when Kyle Turner’s cross was beautifully volleyed home by Brian Graham; Marco van Basten-esque.

Right at the end, Partick were denied a third, Danny Mullen’s thunderbolt tipped onto the crossbar by Ross Laidlaw, so 2-0 it finished and County are lucky it wasn’t more.

This merely continued Thistle’s excellent form in these play-offs.

So, the Jags are on course to become the first team in the history of the play-offs to go up when beginning in the quarter-finals, ending the club’s five-year exile from the Premiership.

As for Ross County, they have a mountain to climb if they’re to preserve their top-flight status.

Malky Mackay’s men won at home just five times all season, although their three victories in 2023 in Dingwall ended 4-0, 3-0 and 2-0, requiring an equally emphatic margin of victory here.

The Staggies chances look slim, especially given that Dylan Smith and Owura Edwards will both be suspended.

So, will it be an afternoon of celebration for the Partick Thistle supporters who make the long trip up to Dingwall?
