Kilmarnock vs Celtic match preview

Celtic have picked up 17 of the last 21 major trophies up for grabs in Scotland, winning six of the last seven League Cups, so will this be the start of another victorious cup run for the champions?

Brendan Rodgers is back in Glasgow and, so far, he’s made the perfect start to his second spell at the helm, with his team winning two out of two in the Premiership.

The Hoops defeated Ross County 4-2 in Flag Day, before a hard-fought 3-1 victory over an impressive Aberdeen at Pittodrie last weekend.

Liel Abada poked home at the back-post and Kyōgo Furuhashi pounced on some lackadaisical defending, before Matt O’Riley secured the points, firing home after an excellent pull-back by Yang Hyun-jun.

First time round, Rodgers won all 12 League Cup ties as Celts manager, picking up three winners medals, and this streak is unlikely to change here.

Although, Kilmarnock do have very recent form when it comes to upsetting the odds on their own turf.

Derek McInnes’ men then continued their unbeaten start to this campaign last Sunday, holding Hearts to a credible goalless draw at Tynecastle.

Last season, Kilmarnock got all the way to the semi-finals of the League Cup, the club’s first visit to Hampden for a decade, but their run was ended by Celtic, beaten 2-0 at the National Stadium.

Given that the Hoops’ last three visits to Rugby Park have seen them win 4-0, 5-0 and 4-1, the traveling Celtic supporters are the ones likely to be celebrating come full time.
