Celtic vs Aberdeen match preview

Celtic’s season began with a home game against Aberdeen, so there’ll be a sense of déjà vu on trophy presentation day at Parkhead.

Exactly 300 days ago, Stephen Welsh’s header, followed by Jota’s rocket, saw Celtic to a 2-0 victory on the opening weekend of the campaign.

Ange Postecoglou’s team accumulated 95 points from the first 102 available this season, thereby retaining the title at Tynecastle on 7 May.

Since then though, the Hoops are actually winless in three, losing at both Ibrox and Easter Road, drawing with St Mirren at home in-between.

On Wednesday night, despite leading through both Reo Hatate and then Oh Hyeon-gyu, Hibernian fought back and beat the Bhoys 4-2 in Edinburgh.

With the title already in the bag, these results are essentially irrelevant, although Postecoglou may be slightly concerned ahead of next Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final against Inverness Caley Thistle.

As for Aberdeen, this has been an extremely eventful but ultimately successful season.

Back in January, Jim Goodwin was sacked, following a cup exit at the hands of Darvel, a 5-0 drubbing at Tynecastle and a 6-0 hammering at Easter Road.

Barry Robson took over a team at rock bottom, but the Dons then won seven on the spin immediately before the split.

In mid-week, the Reds demolished St Mirren 3-0 at Pittodrie, with Leighton Clarkson bagging a stunning, trademark free-kick, before captain Graeme Shinnie scored an unexpected brace.

This rubber stamped third place for Aberdeen, who will enjoy guaranteed UEFA group stage football for the first time in 16 years, assuming Celtic win the cup final.

Can the Dons play the role of party-poopers, or will Celtic enjoy a victory, before getting their hands on the Premiership trophy?
