Gary Neville backs Mauricio Pochettino to have an immediate impact at Chelsea

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham manager is reportedly firmly in the lead for the race to take over at Stamford Bridge, with Todd Boehly said to be preparing a contract offer for the 51-year-old

Foundering Premier League giant Chelsea appears to be edging closer to naming the next ship’s captain at Stamford Bridge after reports from Football.London (citing The Times) details club co-owner Todd Boehly preparing a contract offer for Mauricio Pochettino, with the Argentine possibly being confirmed to take charge in the summer as early as this weekend.

This falls in line with previous reports suggesting that the Blues had gained considerable ground after discussions with the former international midfielder over a return to London.

Should the 51-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham boss become the new man in charge in West London, the task ahead of him will be a daunting one. Reports earlier today have linked a number of players in the Blues senior setup as having already grown frustrated with life in the English capital less than twelve months after their arrival.

Despite the speedbumps that would undoubtedly come with his potential return to the top flight of English football, controversial pundit Gary Neville has backed Pochettino to be an immediate success at the Bridge.

While speaking with The Overlap, the former Manchester United stalwart defender spoke of the Argentine’s managerial talent and ability to move beyond what has gone on behind the scenes at Chelsea while being the perfect man for the young core of talent that the club has continued to assemble.

I think he is a really talented coach. I think Chelsea next year could really surprise us. Pochettino will bring the club together because he will; he’s likeable, and the players will respect him enormously.

I think he’ll do a very, very good job next season. He’ll cover a lot of the stuff that’s going on behind the scenes is my prediction. If they get him, I think you’ll have a very good season next year.

Those players are perfect for Pochettino; they are talented and young, but they just need direction.
