Why some Todd Boehly signings are ‘already starting to regret’ Chelsea move

Some of the Blues have been left feeling blue

It has been less than 12 months since Todd Boehly took charge of Chelsea, but already major problems are mounting.

The Blues lie a lowly 11th in the Premier League, have been through three managers and are out of every competition, with no prospect of European football next season.

Following a mixed spell under Graham Potter, the club have lost all five of their games under caretaker boss Frank Lampard, most recently falling to a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge against Brentford.

It is set to get worse too, with games against Arsenal, both Manchester clubs and Newcastle United before the end of the season. Though there is less than a 1% chance that they get relegated according to most statistical models, it is hard to see where the next points will come from for the west London outfit.

Now, as per the Athletic, there are additional squad problems, with players signed in the last 12 months having penned long term deals (as long as 8 years in some cases) in order to better amortise their transfer fees as well as ensuring their long-term futures.

This has led to an issue, with reports that several ‘are already starting to express regret at having committed to such a lengthy term’ thanks to a lack of first team opportunities.

A major squad reshuffle is expected this summer, but in the case of Madueke in particular, all of Raheem Sterling, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Christian Pulisic are ahead of him in the pecking order at present, while the arrival of Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig will make game time even harder to come by.
