Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid match preview

Will Barcelona move one step closer to the La Liga title?

Last month, Barça came from a goal down to beat Real Madrid in el Clásico, moving 12 points clear at the top, thereby pretty much wrapping up the title that night.

However, more recently, Xavi’s team have endured back-to-back goalless draws, held by Girona and then Getafe.

Having also been dumped out of the Copa del Rey by Real this month, the Blaugrana have failed to score in over 290 minutes of play.

Nevertheless, it’s not yet time to panic, with Barcelona still boasting an 11 point lead at the top of the table.

Even if Real Madrid won all of their games, which is not going to happen, Barça would still only need to accumulate 17 points from their remaining nine fixtures to secure the title.

Atlético Madrid have not won at Camp Nou since 2006, but make the journey north as Spain’s form team.

Last weekend, Antoine Griezmann’s brace saw los Colchoneros beat Almería 2-1 at Cívitas Metropolitano.

That made it six successive La Liga wins for Diego Simeone’s side who are unbeaten in 13, dating back to 8 January when they were beaten by Barça.

So, will Atleti stun the league-leaders, or will Barcelona continue their march towards a first title in four years?

Barcelona team news

The home side have been decimated by injuries recently, with Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Ousmane Dembélé, Andreas Christensen and now Sergi Roberto all sidelined.

Roberto hobbled off after just 18 minutes last Sunday meaning, here, Eric García will come in at centre-back, with Jules Koundé shifting over to the right.

19 year old left-back Alejandro Balde started as part of the front three at the Coliseum, but either Ansu Fati or Ferran Torres could come in here.

Robert Lewandowski leads the way in the race for the Pichichi, while Marc-André ter Stegen will win a first Trofeo Zamora, highlighting their importance at opposite ends of the field.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): ter Stegen; Koundé, García, Araújo, Alba; Busquets, Gavi, Kessié; Raphinha, Ansu, Lewandowski.

Atlético Madrid team news

Antoine Griezmann might just be La Liga’s form player right now, with last Sunday’s brace taking his tally to 12 goals this season.

He’ll lead the attack against his former club, and will be partnered by Álvaro Morata with Memphis, another former Barça forward, out injured.

At the back Stefan Savić has been sent off three times in 2023 already, the first of which came in the reverse fixture.

Axel Witsel could start in the back three, with Reinildo out injured.

Predicted XI (5-3-2): Oblak; Molina, Hermoso, Giménez, Witsel, Carrasco; de Paul, Koke, Llorente; Griezmann, Morata.
