Finland vs Denmark match preview

Group H’s top two head-to-head in Helsinki, with both seeking to move three points closer to a spot at Euro 2024.

When these two met just 548 miles south-west in Copenhagen, Denmark ran out 3-1 winners in March, with a certain Rasmus Højlund bagging a first international hat-trick.

At that point, most would’ve expected the Danes to run away at the top of the group, although this is not how it’s transpired, not yet at least anyway.

Kasper Hjulmand’s team are yet to win on the road in this campaign, first completely collapsing in Astana, beaten 3-2, despite leading 2-0 against Kazakhstan with less than 20 minutes remaining.

Then, in their most-recent away fixture, the Euro 2020 semi-finalists were held to a 1-1 draw in Ljubljana, with that man Højlund on target again, his sixth in just four qualifiers.

On Thursday, de Rød-Hvide did maintain their 100% record at Parken, swatting aside whipping boys San Marino 4-0, with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Joakim Mæhle, Jonas Wind and Christian Eriksen all on target.

Finland meantime have only ever featured at one major tournament, debuting at Euro 2020, beating Denmark in their opener at Parken, a match of course overshadowed by Eriksen’s collapse.

Now, Markku Kanerva’s team are in a good position to qualify for back-to-back Euros, currently occupying first place at the mid-way point of this campaign.

Since that aforementioned defeat in the reverse fixture, the Eagle-Owls have won four on the spin, beating Northern Ireland 1-0, Slovenia 2-0 and then San Marino 6-0.

On Thursday, Finland’s winning streak continued, overcoming Kazakhstan 1-0 in Astana, courtesy of Oliver Antman’s dramatic late winner.

So, will Finland win a fifth consecutive qualifier for just the second time, 28 years after first achieving this, or will Denmark’s quality shine through at Helsinki Olympic Stadium?

Finland team news

Oliver Antman’s amazing goal-scoring form continued in Astana on Thursday, taking his tally to five for Finland, despite having made just seven appearances for the senior team.

Joel Pohjanpalo and Teemu Pukki will join him in attack.

Denmark team news

Rasmus Højlund is currently the joint-top scorer in Euro 2024 qualifying, having scored six so far, including a hat-trick when Finland visited Parken.

The striker made his Manchester United debut last Sunday and, having come on for half an hour on Thursday, is likely to lead the line here.

Centre-back Simon Kjær will earn his 128th cap, meaning he’s one short of Peter Schmeichel’s all-time national record.
