Feyenoord vs PSV Eindhoven match preview

It’s time for the traditional curtain raiser to the Dutch football season, with the 27th edition of the Johan Cruijff Schaal taking place on Friday night in Rotterdam.

For the first time in five years, this fixture does not feature Ajax, with PSV looking to win three successive shields, having beaten Ajax in both of the last two seasons, 4-0 and then 5-3 in Amsterdam 12 months ago.

The Rood-witten are back competing for this silverware as KNVB Cup winners, having defeated Ajax on penalties to claim their 11th cup title back in April.

This was achieved under Ruud van Nistelrooy, who mysteriously resigned as manager soon after, with Peter Bosz the new man in charge in Eindhoven.

Of course, PSV will want to triumph in this one, but’ll also have half an eye on Tuesday’s Champions League tie, taking on Sturm Graz at Philips Stadion in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie.

No such concerns for Feyenoord who, as Eredivisie champions, go straight into the Champions League group phase.

As champions, with this match taking place at De Kuip too, Feyenoord are firm favourites to lift the Johan Cruyff Shield, in a match that usually guarantees goals.
