Louis van Gaal’s first match as Manchester United manager couldn’t have gone much better.
United cruised to a 7-0 victory in their friendly against LA Galaxy, with new man Ander Herrera pulling the strings in midfield.
While van Gaal expected to see results from his training sessions with the team, he admitted in his post-match press conference that not even he was expecting such an emphatic result.
“When you see us train you can expect something but not 7-0. That was a surprise for me as well. And there were also some beautiful goals. It was not only the way of football but also that we scored out of beautiful attacks.”
Van Gaal also spoke about the team’s new tactical formation, a 3-5-2 tested out to outstanding effect.
“With the quality of the players we have, I think we can play better with this system. We have four strikers, for example. And when we play 4-3-3, I have three strikers on the pitch. I don’t think that’s good. That’s why we play with two strikers.”
