Match preview: Qatar vs Ecuador

Qatar and Ecuador kick off the 2022 World Cup on Sunday at the Al Bayt Stadium.

The hosts face a tricky task in getting out of Group A as they come up against European giants the Netherlands, AFCON champions Senegal and strong South American qualifiers Ecuador.

Qatar will be hopeful of making a good account of themselves as they look to avoid becoming just the second host nation to exit at the group stages after South Africa back in 2010.

Back in September, they produced an interesting result as they held Chile to a 2-2 draw.

But in 2022, they have just two wins to their name in nine matches and head into the tournament with expectations low.

Meanwhile, Ecuador could be a very interesting team to watch having been a shock qualifier from South America.

Gustavo Alfaro’s team came through very tough qualifying to finish 4th behind Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.

Only Brazil managed to outscore them in qualifying as they netted 27 times in 18 matches.

Michael Estrada was their star man in qualifying as he netted 8 times to place him sixth overall.
