Panama vs France match preview

France made an inauspicious start to this World Cup campaign, but are now very much in pole position to take top spot in Group F.

Ten days ago, les Bleues were held to a goalless draw by Jamaica in their tournament opener, creating not a lot of clear-cut opportunites, although Kenza Dali did twice thwack the woodwork.

Nevertheless, in Saturday’s eagerly-anticipated heavyweight clash, Hervé Renard’s side came to life, beating Brazil 2-1 in Brisbane.

Les Bleues dominated the early stages and deservedly led after 17 minutes when Kadidiatou Diani’s header across was nodded into the far corner expertly by Eugénie Le Sommer.

A rare header assist for a headed goal, something you don’t see that often.

Roared on by a predominantly pro-Brazilian crowd at Lang Park, A Seleção equalised on the hour mark and, at that point, it looked as though the tide had turned in favour of the Copa América winners.

That secured a priceless, statement victory for Hervé Renard’s team, who are now targeting another three points that would wrap up top spot in this group.

Panama meantime will be heading home after this one which, in a very competitive section, isn’t too surprising.

The debutants were handed a baptism of fire to begin their first-ever World Cup campaign, smashed 4-0 by Brazil in their opener in Adelaide and it could easily have been seven of eight.

Then, in Saturday’s all-CONCACAF affair, las Canaleras were beaten 1-0 by Jamaica in Perth, with this game also witnessing a header from a corner, which has become a theme of this tournament hasn’t it?

Ignacio Quintana’s team upset the odds just to get here via the inter-confederation play-offs and, while Panama have not embarrassed themselves, they’re set to exit without a point or even a goal to their name.

Anything other than an emphatic French victory at Sydney Football Stadium would be a surprise.

Panama team news

American-born striker Riley Tanner came into the team against Jamaica, so is set to lead the line again.

However, if anyone is going to become the first Panamanian women to score a World Cup here, it’s most likely to be captain Marta Cox; keep an eye out for her.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Bailey; Castillo, Baltrip-Reyes, Vargas, Jaén; González, Quintero, Cedeño, Cox; Tanner, Riley.

France teams news

Ahead of a round of 16 tie on Tuesday, that could be against Germany, Hervé Renard may be tempted to rest a few here.

Sakina Karchaoui, Sandie Toletti, Kenza Dali and Clara Matéo, who are all one yellow card away from suspension, are prime candidates to be left out.

The aforementioned Dali was excellent off the bench against Jamaica, earning herself a start on Saturday.

Captain Wendie Renard headed home her 35th international goal against Brazil, which isn’t bad considering she’s a centre-back.

Les Bleues’ record goal-scorer though is Eugénie Le Sommer, taking her tally to 90 in Brisbane, having now netted at seven different major tournaments.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Peyraud-Magnin; Périsset, Renard, Lakrar, Karchaoui; Toletti, Geyoro, Diani; Dali, Bacha, Le Sommer.
