New Zealand vs Philippines match preview

Having ended their excruciating wait for a first-ever World Cup win, can New Zealand now book their place in the knockout stages?

This is the Football Ferns’ sixth appearance at a World Cup and, before this year, they’d never claimed a win, losing 12 of 15 outings.

Last Thursday night, in the tournament’s opening game, they had the opportunity to change that, one that they certainly grasped with both hands.

In front of over 42,000 supporters at Eden Park, Jitka Klimková’s team were fantastic throughout, causing a big shock by beating former world champions Norway.

The game’s only goal came shortly after half time and was a fabulous free-flowing team move, starting with a goal-kick before Jacqui Hand burst down the right and put in a cross that Hannah Wilkinson connected with.

Later on, New Zealand could’ve wrapped up the points, awarded a penalty in stoppage time, but Ria Percival’s effort thwacked the crossbar although, in the end, it mattered not.

Philippines meantime made their World Cup debut in Dunedin on Friday, taking on Switzerland.

Alen Stajcic’s side were very competitive but, in the end, were defeated 2-0 at Forsyth Barr Stadium, conceding a penalty in first half stoppage time, with the Swiss’ clincher coming just after the hour mark.

So, the Filipinas will be aiming to get World Cup points on the board for the first time here, or even just score a goal.

These two teams met in a friendly in California last September, with New Zealand coming from a goal down to win 2-1, their go-ahead goal, scored by Ali Riley, coming just seven minutes from time.

In this crucial clash at a sold-out Wellington Regional Stadium, will the Football Ferns win again?

New Zealand team news

Jitka Klimková could name an uncharged line-up and, given how could they were on Thursday, there’s no reason to change.

Hannah Wilkinson’s winner against Norway means she’s now scored at the World Cup in her teens, twenties and thirties.

Midfielder Ria Percival was a fitness doubt pre-tournament, but was outstanding in Auckland, hitting the sweetest-missed penalty you’re ever likely to see.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Esson; Bott, Scott, Brown, Riley; Paige Riley, Hassett, Percival, Steinmetz; Wilkinson, Hand.

Philippines teams news

Alen Stajcic, somewhat surprisingly, switched to a back three against Switzerland, so will he persist with this system?

Sarina Bolden is this teams star striker, so could she become the first Philippines player to score at a World Cup?

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Davies-McDaniel; Cowart, Long, Beard; Barker, Quezada-Keča, Sawicki, Eggesvik, Harrison, Guillou, Bolden.
