Jamaica vs Brazil match preview

Not many would’ve predicted that Brazil would be kicking off third in Group F ahead of the final matchday, with this scenario setting up a winner takes all showdown in Melbourne.

Just nine days ago, everyone was raving about Brazil, after they’d made a trademark, jogo bonito start to this campaign, smashing Panama 4-0 at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Ary Borges bagging a hat-trick in Adelaide, but it was Bia Zaneratto’s goal, teed up by Borges’ back-heel, that had the world sitting up and taking notice, as it came from a majestic, free-flowing team move.

So, Pia Sundhage’s side went into Saturday’s heavyweight clash with France feeling unstoppable, before firmly coming crashing right back down to earth.

Les Bleues edged the first half, taking the lead in the 17th minute, before the Seleção equalised just before the hour mark, with the ball breaking to Debinha in the penalty area and she cooly slotted home.

Backed by a partisan, pro-Brazilian crowd in Brisbane, they looked set to go on and claim the three points, only to break the first rule of women’s football: never leave Wendie Renard unmarked in your own box.

Jamaica meanwhile had never even earned a point at the World Cup before, losing all three matches four summers ago on debut, including a 3-0 defeat to Brazil.

Now though, the Reggae Girlz kick off in second place, yet to taste defeat Down Under.

First, Lorne Donaldson’s team held France to a very unlikely scoreless draw in Sydney before, at the weekend, beating CONCACAF-rivals Panama in Perth, despite the absence of taliswomen Bunny Shaw.

The only goal of that one came ten minutes into the second half, with Trudi Carter’s corner headed home by centre-back Allyson Swaby.

As a result, Jamaica need just a point in this one to join France in the round of 16, an outcome that would see Brazil crash out in the group phase for the first time since 1995.

So, will Seleção pick up the victory at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium they so desperately need, or will Jamaica cause one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history?

Jamaica team news

As mentioned, having been sent off against France, super star striker Khadija Shaw sat out Saturday’s win over Panama, although she did still seem to enjoy herself in Perth.

Bunny Shaw will return here, which exponentially increases the Reggae Girlz’s chances of an upset.

Deneisha Blackwood and Tiffany Cameron both came into the back four against Panama, while Drew Spence will once again need to be at her best in midfield.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Spencer; Cameron, C Swaby, A Swaby, Blackwood; Sampson, Spence, Primus, Carter, Brown; Shaw.

Brazil teams news

All other things being equal, Pia Sundhage’s side should win this one, so she just needs to make sure the pressure doesn’t get to her side.

Adriana got the nod as Debinha’s striker partner on Saturday, chosen over Bia Zaneratto, so will that be the case again?

Veteran superstar Marta has come off the bench late in both matches so far, hoping that this isn’t her last chance to become the first player to score at six different World Cups.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Letícia; Antônia, Lauren, Rafaelle, Tamires; Luana, Kerolin, Borges, Geyse; Adriana, Debinha.
