Manchester United drop major hint over midfield selection vs Brighton

Manchester United have dropped a major hint regarding their midfield selection for their season opener next week.

For the last several years, one of the main issues Manchester United have faced is a lack of a proper defensive midfielder.

And with Nemanja Matic now having left the club for AS Roma, Man United have no natural defensive mid.

Instead, the club’s only semi-natural DMs are Fred and Scott McTominay. The ‘McFred’ pivot, though, is one United fans have grown to associate with poor results and a lack of quality.

But with United still yet to sign a deep-lying midfielder this summer, it looks as though Man United are starting 2022/23 with Fred and Scott McTominay in a pivot.

As per the MEN: “United still want to sign Frenkie de Jong this summer, but time is running out to get the deal over the line before Ten Hag and his men get down to business. Scott McTominay and Fred were his preferred pivot on tour and, yet again, much of their work on the training ground was done together.”

Manchester United vs Brighton

Manchester United’s first game of the season sees them take on Brighton on Sunday the 7th of August.

The Red Devils will also no doubt be keen to avoid a repeat of the 4-0 drubbing they received at the hands of the Seagulls in their last meeting on May 7th.

Brighton, though, are no pushover and are expected to prove a stern test for Ten Hag in his first real taste of English football.
