Mourinho trolls Gerrard

He may no longer be the manager of a Premier League club, or any club for that matter, but Jose Mourinho knows exactly how to wind people up and stay in the spotlight.

It’s been mere days since he was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur, ahead of their League Cup final loss to Manchester City.

Yet the Portuguese is still making himself heard on social media, after trolling former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard.

Mourinho posted an image of himself with Gerrard, as the Liverpool legend attempted to steal a ball from the then-Chelsea coach.

The caption read: ‘Anfield, April 27th 2014. Ball possession.’

This was of course a reference to the moment in which Gerrard slipped to leave the ball for Chelsea striker Demba Ba to run through and score, sealing the points for the Blues at Anfield, in an ultimately costly moment in Liverpool’s failed title pursuit.

The incident marks its 7-year anniversary today. Something Mourinho seemingly did not want Gerrard forgetting.

It is well known how seriously this impacted Gerrard. His wife Alex explained how she felt watching it play out live.

Gerrard never won the Premier League, instead watching on as Jurgen Klopp and Jordan Henderson lifted the title last season.

No trophy this time

Whilst today, Mourinho may be chuckling to himself, Gerrard will ultimately have the last laugh at the end of the season, having won a league title with Rangers – reclaiming the trophy for the club and stopping Celtic from making it 10 in a row.

Mourinho’s trophyless stint with Spurs marked his first as a manager. As mentioned, he was sacked by the club ahead of the League Cup final, which Ryan Mason took charge of.

It seemed a strange move by Tottenham, and their performance on Sunday was exceptionally poor from the North London side.

Mourinho masterminded a victory over City earlier in the season, and many may wonder what would have happened had he been left in charge to face the Sky Blues once again.

Spurs are now without a trophy since their League Cup win in 2008.

It has become a stick to beat the side with, and there is even a website dedicated to keeping football fans up to date with how long, to the second, it has been since the Lilywhites tasted glory. The relevant Twitter account seemed rather pleased that City stretched this run for at least another season.
