Chelsea add Julian Nagelsmann to managerial shortlist as possible Graham Potter replacement

The 35-year-old German tactician is now on the market after being dismissed by Bayern Munich, with Chelsea now in line to join the queue for his services

Struggling Premier League giants Chelsea could be set for another change in the dugout at Stamford Bridge after reports from Germany detail that the Blues have now added Julian Nagelsmann to their managerial shortlist.

According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the 35-year-old highly-touted tactician is now on the radar screen in west London after he was surprisingly axed from his position as head trainer at German juggernaut Bayern Munich.

Despite the unexpected end after his relatively short spell back in his native Bavaria, the former TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig manager remains one of the brightest young minds in the technical area anywhere in Europe, and as such, will no doubt have a wealth of suitors to join the queue come the summer. And Chelsea might be, and should be, one of them.

The situation in the English capital from a Chelsea perspective is an intriguing one. On the surface, Graham Potter has objectively failed in his tasking when it comes to the Premier League, as the Blues sit tenth in the table at the time of writing while also eleven points adrift of the Champions League places.

Potter has, however, at least temporarily, been given a reprieve on account of helping the club overcome Borussia Dortmund and advance to the quarterfinals of the competition, but as stern a test as any awaits in the vein of CL holders Real Madrid.

Should Chelsea fall at the hands of Carlo Ancelotti and his vaunted Madrid side, Potter would then be under enormous pressure to make a late-season push on the domestic front to secure some semblance of European football. Despite the continued public backing from ownership duo Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, there is a real sense that the landscape could shift abruptly should the club’s situation in the table remain in stark contrast to their standing in the current English game.
