International round up game two: Liverpool

How the Reds got on over their international fixtures

A total of 10 Liverpool players saw action over the most recent set of international fixtures, with mixed results.

You can read how they got on in the first game of their break here.

Star man Mohamed Salah had an off night as his Egypt side fell to a shock 3-1 defeat to Tunisia in a friendly.

Luis Diaz also struggled, playing 71 minutes and picking up a yellow card in their 0-0 draw with Chile.

In better news though, Cody Gakpo scored for the second consecutive game as the Netherlands edged past the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in their final international of the break. The striker converted a penalty in the 19th minute in a game which Virgil van Dijk also played all of.

On the other side, teammate Caohmin Kelleher was once again forced to watch on from among the Irish substitutes.

Dominik Szoboszlai was on the winning side as he played 90 minutes in Hungary’s 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic.

Fellow attacker Diogo Jota enjoyed a fantastic night out for Portugal against minnows Luxembourg as they thrashed them 9-0. Though Bruno Fernandes took the plaudits, Jota chipped in with two goals and an assist to help his side continue their impressive EURO2024 qualifying record.

Andy Robertson was less successful though, as he was part of a Scotland side that fell to a 3-1 friendly defeat to old-rivals England at Hampden Park.

Summer signing Wataru Endo played the final half hour for Japan as they made it two wins from two over the international break with an impressive 4-1 win over Turkey.

Fellow midfielder Alexis Mac Allister played 85 minutes in central midfielder for Argentina as they beat Bolivia 3-0 to maintain their 100% start to their World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign.

However, Kostas Tsimikas was an unused substitute as Greece beat Gibraltar 5-0 to boost their chances of qualifying for next season’s tournament.

The Reds have been handed something of an injury scare too, with Darwin Nunez hooked at halftime with what Marcelo Bielsa described as “muscular difficulties” during Uruguay’s 2-1 defeat to Ecuador on Tuesday.

Though it doesn’t sound serious, it could leave the forward a doubt for the weekend’s clash with Wolves, which kicks off at 12.30.

At youth level, Harvey Elliot played 90 minutes for the England U21s as they beat Luxembourg U21s to kickstart their own EURO qualifying campaign.
