Sampdoria enter 2023 in the relegation zone as Serie A action returns to our TV sets this Wednesday with Sassuolo set to welcome the relegation-threatened side to the Mapei Stadium with the home club struggling themselves.

There’s been barely anything to shout about for Sassuolo in the 2022/23 campaign so far with just four wins on the board from 15 games. In fact, with 15 goals scored themselves, only Lecce and Spezia have scored fewer for those outside of the bottom three.

Sassuolo also managed to lose to both Serie A sides, Inter Milan and Empoli, in their friendlies during the World Cup break. The club did, however, defeat the high-flying Ligue 1 side Marseille 3-2.

As for Sampdoria, they sit down in 19th still and have been in the relegation zone for practically the entire season. In fact, it took them several weeks to get a win on the board and this remains their only victory in Serie A so far.

Worse yet, there is still an alarming gap of seven points to make up on Spezia in 17th.
