This is one of just two all-Premiership ties in the League Cup second round and this one might be too close to call.
St Mirren’s group stage campaign began in embarrassing fashion, beaten 1-0 at Montrose, but they bounced back with wins over Arbroath, Cowdenbeath and Forfar, thereby taking top spot in Group H.
Since, Stephen Robinson’s side have also made the perfect start to the new Premiership season, first beating Hibs 3-2 at Easter Road, courtesy of Alex Greive’s 89th minute winner.
Then, last Saturday, Mikael Mandron was the match-winner in a 2-1 victory over Dundee in Paisley.
So, the Buddies come into this tie full of confidence, even if it certainly won’t be easy.
That’s because Motherwell are currently unbeaten in 12 matches in League and cup, dating back to 15 April, their longest sequence since the last ‘80s.
Stuart Kettlewell’s team accumulated 11 points in the group stages, beating Elgin City, Queen’s Park and East Fife, and have four points on the board after two Premiership matches.
The Steelmen only managed a 1-1 draw with Dundee on opening day, but did beat Hibs 2-1 at Fir Park last Sunday, with Conor Wilkinson and Mika Biereth on target in an entertaining second half.
So, both will firmly believe they can get through this tie, with St Mirren hoping to make home advantage count at the SMISA Stadium.
