St Mirren vs Heart of Midlothian match preview

A key game in the race for Europe, with both teams in desperate need of a win.

Heart of Midlothian were in the box-seat to reclaim that coveted third spot not so long ago, but come into this one having lost six of their last seven, form that ultimately cost Robbie Neilson his job.

Neilson’s final game in charge was actually a 2-0 defeat at the hands of St Mirren last month.

Under caretaker boss Steven Naismith, it’s certainly been a mixed bag.

First, Hearts were beaten in the Edinburgh Derby, before smashing Ross County 6-1 a week later, followed by last Sunday’s 2-0 defeat against Celtic.

Alex Cochrane’s controversial red card on the cusp of half time not helping their cause in the latter.

Thus, ahead of that massive game next Saturday, Hearts really need to win in Paisley, if they’re to have any chance of securing guaranteed UEFA group stage football.

St Mirren meantime are featuring in the top six for the first time since the split was introduced in 2001, now seeking to qualify for Europe after 36 years away.

However, the Buddies’ top five hopes suffered a serious blow last weekend, beaten 2-1 by Hibs at Easter Road.

This leaves Stephen Robinson’s men in sixth, three points below Hibernian and four points adrift Hearts.

With the Saints’ remaining fixtures Celtic (A), Aberdeen (A) and Rangers (H), this feels must win, if they’re to stay in European contention.

So far this season, the three meetings between these two clubs have produced one Hearts win, one Saints win and a draw.

As a result, this clash at St Mirren Park is very tough to call.
