St Johnstone vs Stirling Albion match preview

St Johnstone were double-cup winners as recently as 2021, but have already been eliminated from this season’s League Cup with a game to spare.

Having lost to Stenhousemuir in their opener, Steven MacLean’s men smashed Alloa Athletic 4-0 last weekend, but were then beaten 2-1 at the hands of Ayr on Tuesday, ending their hopes of progression.

In short, it’s been a catastrophic campaign for the Saints, who will be looking to claim a morale-boosting win, ahead of their Premiership opener against Hearts next Saturday.

League Two Champions Stirling Albion meantime have it all to play for, as they aim to get through the group phase for the first time since this format was introduced in 2016.

To date, the Binos have seven points on the board, having drawn with Ayr before back-to-back wins over Alloa and then fierce rivals Stenny.

So, Darren Young’s team must better Ayr’s result simultaneously to take top spot, although they could still get through as a best-ranked runners-up.
