After a very damaging week just before the international break, Rangers are under enormous pressure to pick up three points in Perth.
First, the Gers failed to qualify for the Champions League group phase, embarrassingly smashed 5-1 by PSV Eindhoven in their play-off second leg at Philips Stadion.
Four days later, Michael Beale’s team were then beaten 1-0 by fierce rivals Celtic at Ibrox in the first Glasgow derby of the season, mustering just three shots on target all afternoon.
So, having also lost at Rugby Park on the opening weekend, the Light Blues are all the way down in fourth.
Many supporters are calling for Beale to go so, ahead of Rangers’ Europa League opener against Real Betis on Thursday, his team can ill-afford to slip-up here.
Ten months ago, St Johnstone did manage to beat Rangers 2-1 at McDiarmid Park, a result that ultimately cost Giovanni van Bronckhorst his job soon after.
Right now, Steven MacLean’s team are bottom of the table, still searching for their first victory of the campaign.
The Saints do at least come into this one following back-to-back draws, first holding Celtic to a goalless stalemate at Parkhead, courtesy of a man of the match display from goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov.
Then, a week later, they came from 2-0 down to salvage a 2-2 draw against Tayside rivals Dundee, with Max Kucheriavyi scoring twice in the final four minutes.
So, can St Johnstone climb off the foot of the table with a famous victory over Rangers?
