Rangers vs St Mirren match preview

After yet another Glasgow derby defeat last weekend, can Rangers salvage their season?

A week ago, the Light Blues’ faint hopes of regaining the Premiership title were all but extinguished by a 3-2 defeat at Celtic Park.

James Tavernier did score twice, the first of which was an outrageous free-kick, but two calamitous defensive errors from Ben Davies gifted Celtic two quick-fire goals.

This is Rangers’ first league defeat since 6 November and the first time they’ve tasted defeat in the Premiership under Michael Beale.

Beale has won 18 of his 21 matches in charge, but the three exceptions have all been against Celtic, drawing 2-2 in the league at Ibrox before defeat in the League Cup Final.

The Old Firm go head-to-head again at Hampden in a fortnight in the Scottish Cup semi-finals, with Rangers simply needing to win to prevent this season from being a disaster.

Last weekend, the Buddies sprung a surprise by beating Hearts at Tynecastle, with Curtis Main and Alex Gogić firing in quick-fire goals.

That made it back-to-back wins for Stephen Robinson’s side, who’ve taken 17 points from their last ten outings.

This leaves St Mirren fifth, needing to, at least, remain there to be back on the continent next season.

The Saints did hold Rangers to a 1-1 draw in Paisley when the two last met, but haven’t won in Govan this century.

A routine home win seems likely at Ibrox.
