Match preview

Following Tuesday night’s famous European comeback, it’s back to league business for the Gers, with another huge mid-week tie just on the horizon.

Having lost the first leg 2-0 in Belgium, Rangers had it all to do as Royale Union Saint-Gilloise visited Ibrox for the second leg of their Champions League qualifier.

In truth, it looked like being a night of frustration for the home side until, in first half stoppage time, they were awarded a penalty, that was duly dispatched by James Tavernier.

On the hour mark, Antonio Čolak nodded home an aggregate leveller before, with just ten to play, Malik Tillman’s header completed the comeback.

This is just the tenth time a Scottish club have lost the first leg of a European tie by 2+ goals but still gone through and the first time Rangers have achieved this.

So now, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side will face PSV Eindhoven in the play-off round, one step away from returning to the Champions League group stage for the first time in 12 years.

Last Saturday, they beat Kilmarnock 2-0 at home, having battled to a 2-1 victory at Livingston the week before.

Here, can St Johnstone spring a surprise, hoping the home side have one eye on PSV?

The Saints, dramatically, beat Motherwell 2-1 at Fir Park a week ago, with Stevie May slotting home a 94th minute winner.

This got Callum Davidson’s team off the mark for the campaign, having conceded a stoppage time winner at home to Hibs a week earlier.

Anything other than a routine home win at Ibrox would be a major surprise.
