Match preview

Last weekend, Kilmarnock were at Hampden taking on Celtic in the League Cup semi-finals, with that 2-0 defeat making them doubly determined to be back at the National Stadium in this competition.

Killie won this trophy in 1920, 1929 and 1997 although, since the latter, they’ve never gone further than the last eight.

Of course, a cup run would be great, but the priority for Derek McInnes’ men is Premiership survival.

On Wednesday night, Killie were beaten 3-2 by Rangers.

Chris Stokes broke the deadlock with a header and then Joe Wright scored a screamer, but Danny Armstrong’s needless red card made a positive result an impossible task.

This defeat leaves Kilmarnock in the relegation play-off spot, below Motherwell and Dundee United on goal difference.

Dumbarton meantime are targeting an immediate return to League One, currently top of League Two, four points clear of Stirling Albion.

In this competition, Stephen Farrell’s men overcame Cumnock Juniors and Clyde in rounds two and three, meaning the Sons are on the verge of the last 16 for the first time in five seasons.

Will Kilmarnock prove to be too strong for the fourth-tier leaders at Rugby Park?
