Falkirk vs Inverness Caledonian Thistle match preview

Scottish Cup semi-final weekend kicks off with two lower-league clubs dreaming of a return to Hampden for the final on 3 June.

These two last met in the Scottish Cup eight years ago in the final itself, with Caley Thistle prevailing 2-1.

This season, bizarrely, Inverness were actually knocked out in the fourth round, but were then reinstated into the competition because Queen’s Park had fielded an ineligible player.

Billy Dodds’ side have firmly grasped this second opportunity, subsequently eliminating two top-flight teams, beating Livingston 3-0 and then Kilmarnock 2-1, with Billy Mckay scoring three of those goals.

The Caley Jags are also hopeful of being a Premiership side themselves in the next month or so, even after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Dundee ended their run of six successive victories.

This leaves Inverness third in the Championship, needing a result against Ayr United in the final game of the season, coming up on Friday, to rubber stamp a play-off spot.

Falkirk meanwhile are seeking to become only the second finalists from outside the top-two tiers, the other being Gretna 17 years ago.

The Bairns have ousted Wick Academy, Alloa, Darvel and Ayr to get this far, so are yet to face Premiership opposition.

Meanwhile, Falkirk are enduring a fourth successive season in League One and, if they’re to change that, it’ll be via the play-offs, with John McGlynn’s team 11 points adrift run-away champions Dunfermline.

Of course, both are desperate for promotion but, for now, they’re solely focussed on Scottish Cup glory.

Who will prevail at Hampden, setting up a date with Celtic or Rangers in June?
