Aberdeen vs Rangers match preview

Will Aberdeen’s recent upturn in form see them to a first home Premiership win over Rangers since that James Maddison free-kick in 2016?

Back in December, Rangers were 2-1 down at Pittodrie going into stoppage time, only for Scott Arfield to equalise in the 95th minute, before bundling home a winner in the 97th; unbelievable scenes.

Just 26 days later, the Gers came from behind to beat the Dons again, this time in the League Cup semi-finals at Hampden, with Kemar Roofe winning the tie in extra time.

Right now, Aberdeen are in terrific form, winning six successive league games for the first time since September 2015.

Last time out, in a rare Friday night extravaganza, Duk was the only scorer as the Dons overcame Ross County 1-0 in Dingwall.

This resurgence under caretaker manager Barry Robson has seen the Reds climb into third, now five points clear of Hearts, who they’ll face at Tynecastle in the post-split fixtures.

Rangers meanwhile are marooned in second, 12 points adrift of Celtic and a whopping 29 better off than their hosts.

The Light Blues’ can only salvage something from this season by winning the Scottish Cup, facing Celtic at Hampden in the semi-finals next Sunday.

Under Michael Beale, the Gers have won 19 of 22 outings, the three they’ve failed to win, yes you guessed it, all coming in Old Firm derbies.

A Rangers win is likely at Pittodrie, but this fixture has a tendency to serve up drama.
