Wolves vs Manchester United: Recommended bets

Wolves’ last home victory over Manchester United came back in April 2019 by a scoreline of 2-1. A repeat of this score on Sunday is available at odds of 10/1.

Manchester United’s last win at Molineux was a 0-5 drumming way back in March 2012. You can back them at 150/1 to rout Wolves by the same scoreline here on Sunday.

Recent Wolves vs Manchester United matches have been low scoring games; each of the last 5 matches in all competitions have produced under 2.5 goals. You can back another low scoring game here on Sunday with odds of 11/10 on for under 2.5 goals.

Willian José has managed just 1 goal in 17 appearances since joining the club from Real Sociedad in the winter. The Brazilian forward scored the opening and ultimately winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Sheffield United here in April. Willian José is the 5/1 favourite to score the game’s opener once again on Sunday. Or 7/5 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Manchester United.

Wolves vs Manchester United: What are the betting odds?

Wolverhampton Wanderers come into this match looking to win back-to-back home games for the first time this season following their 2-1 win over Brighton earlier this month. Wolves are 7/5 slight favourites to beat United in the final game of the 2020/21 season.

Manchester United are the only Premier League side with an invincible record on the road this season. They are looking to make Wolves the 12th away win this season and their 4th in their last 5 Premier League away days. They are 9/5 to finish the campaign with a win here.

Each of the last 2 matches between these sides at the Molineux have ended in a stalemate. Odds of 5/2 are available if you see Wolves and Manchester United cancelling each other out once again on Sunday.

Wolves vs Manchester United: Match preview

After four seasons at the club, Wolves announced on Twitter on Friday that Nuno Espirito Santo would be leaving after this match.

https://twitter.com/Wolves/status/1395723705653858304

In his first season at the club he won the 2017/18 EFL Championship, steering Wolves back to the Premier League after a 6-year absence. They then finished a remarkable 7th in the Premier League in their first campaign back in the top-flight; a feat they then repeated in the second season.

He also led Wolves to the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals; their best performance in Europe since being runners up in 1972.

Despite being rightfully hailed as a legend at the club and having a year remaining on his contract, Wolves announced that Espírito Santo would be leaving the club by mutual consent.

Regardless of results here, a 12th place finish is the best they can hope for from today’s results. However, should results elsewhere go against them, Wolves could finish as low as 15th. This would see them drop approximately £2m per place in Premier League prize money. Given the revenue struggles all Premier League sides are feeling with COVID, securing a 12th place finish could be key to their recruitment plans this summer.

For Manchester United, the match is somewhat a dead-rubber. Win, lose or draw they will finish the season as the runner-up to champions Manchester City. The only question being how big the gap will be between them and their neighbours.

However, with their UEFA Europa League final around the corner, it represents an opportunity for players to force their way into the managers thoughts for the final. For Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it also represents a chance to give some squad players minutes to help with their match sharpness.

All of this makes this match difficult to predict. However, we believe the shock and heightened emotion following yesterday’s managerial announcement coupled with the desire to win a place in Ole’s XI for the final will give United the slight edge in this match.

Raul Jimenez

Wolves team news vs Manchester United

Pedro Neto is ruled out for possibly the rest of the year following surgery to his patella.

Jonny Otto is another whose season is over following surgery on his knee ligament injury. Rayan Aït Nouri has nailed down the left-back spot as his own in his absence and is expected to start here.

Daniel Podence has missed Wolves’ last 2 games following groin surgery. He is on course for an August return to action for the club.

Owen Otasowie is ruled out of Wolves’ final game of the season with a knock. The 20-year-old defensive midfielder has made the step up from the under-21 side this season and will be looking forward to establishing himself in the squad in 2021/22.

Raul Jimenez remains ruled out after fracturing his skull against Arsenal earlier in the season. There was hope he would be involved again this season but the club are being cautious with his return for obvious reasons. He is expected to be fully involved in pre-season with a return to action over the summer.

Fernando Marçal has had a stop-start debut season in English football. He has been an unused substitute the last 2 games following recovery from groin surgery. Marçal may be rotated in for the final game of the season.

Manchester United team news vs Wolves

Phil Jones remains ruled out due to injury. Jones didn’t appear in a matchday squad this season and it is likely he will be moved on in the summer by the club.

Harry Maguire has missed United’s last 3 matches with an ankle injury. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed he is also touch and go to make it for the final.

“We’re not at the testing stage yet. We’ll give him as much time as possible to recover. Hopefully, we can welcome him back for the final. But I’m not sure.”
– Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United manager

Anthony Martial has been out with a knee injury since the beginning of March. He has been working really hard and Solskjaer is hopeful that he will be available for their Europa League final. There is a slim chance he could be on the bench here. However, with nothing to play for it is unlikely he is risked.

Daniel James is nearing a return to action having missed the last 4 matches with an injury. He is now back in training with the team and is expected to get some minutes from the bench late in this game.

Scott McTominay and Fred both picked up knocks in United’s last match against Fulham. With the final right around the corner, it is unlikely either will start here. Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek will be vying for the midfield spot next to Nemanja Matic.
