Betting prediction: Watford 0 – 2 Manchester United

Watford welcomes Manchester United to Vicarage Road on Saturday for this Premier League match.

The Red Devils have the strong upper hand in the head-to-head, with 12 wins to Watford’s 2, from their 14 encounters in the Premier League.

The near-dominance of this fixture can be seen when looking beyond the Premier League too, where United have won 24 games to Watford’s 6 in all competitions since the clubs first faced each other competitively back in 1950.

Home advantage could be crucial to Watford if they are to get a result here. Since the start of the 1980s, all 5 Watford victories over United have come here at Vicarage Road including their last home match against United nearly 2 years ago.

Watford vs Manchester United: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Watford 0 – 2 Manchester United is available at odds of 8.5/1.

2-0 Watford win. Watford’s last home match in this head-to-head came back in December 2019 and ended with a scoreline of 2-0 to the Hornets. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 34/1.

2-2 draw. United’s last away match was a 2-2 draw in Bergamo against Atalanta in the Champions League. Odds of 19/1 are available if you see this match finishing with the same result.

0-1 Manchester United win. Manchester United were 0-1 victors when these sides faced each other in the FA Cup third round at the start of the year. You can back them at 9/1 for the same scoreline here on Saturday.

Over 2.5 goals. Watford’s 2-0 victory over United in their last home match in this head-to-head was the first under 2.5 goal game between them at Vicarage Road in the Premier League era. The previous 8 matches had all produced over 2.5 goals; an average of 4 goals per game. Will this historically high scoring fixture get back to producing entertaining over 2.5 goal games here? You can back another high scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 1.66/1 for over 2.5 goals.

Bruno Fernandes Goalscorer. Bruno (above) was the star when these sides last faced each other in the Premier League back in February 2020. He scored the opening and ultimately winning goal for United from the penalty spot before setting up his team’s third for Mason Greenwood. The Portuguese international is due a goal having failed to find the net in any of his last 8 games for club or country. Bruno is 7.5/1 to grab the opener once again here on Saturday. Or 2.87/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Watford.

Watford vs Manchester United: What are the betting odds?

The Hornets are 6.5/1 to win back-to-back home matches in this head-to-head by taking all 3 points from Manchester United on Saturday.

Whereas, the Red Devils are 1.45/1 to win their 4th away match in their last 5 Premier Leagues games with an away win at Vicarage Road.

Draws in this fixture are extremely rare. The last draw between them was back in the 1980s in the old Division One; a run of 20 consecutive competitive matches without a draw. Odds of 4.5/1 are available if you see Watford and Manchester United cancelling each other out on Saturday.

Watford vs Manchester United: Match preview

There have been 10 managerial changes for Premier League teams since the final ball was kicked to close the 2020/21 campaign.

A section of the United fanbase remains puzzled how some clubs have made 2 changes in that time – such as Spurs and Newcastle – while Ole Gunnar Solskjær has somehow survived the chop despite being under constant pressure from fans and media for well over a year.

In recent weeks we have seen Antonio Conte, Steven Gerrard, Dean Smith and Eddie Howe all take the reigns at Premier League sides. Conte was particularly gutting given many fans of the Red Devils felt he would be perfect to guide them back to the level they have been below since the retirement of Alex Ferguson.

Watford also made the change recently, in their seemingly quarterly effort to replace the man in charge. Xisco managed to survive 7 full Premier League games in the hot-seat before famously trigger-happy Gino Pozzo decided that was long enough. In Claudio Ranieri, they have likely hired the best available to a club at that level in terms of experience and ability. If anybody can keep Watford in the Premier League and even shoot higher, it is ‘the Tinkerman’.

However, with 3 defeats in 4 games since taking charge, you wouldn’t be surprised if Pozzo’s finger is getting itchy once again. The games aren’t going to get any easy too, with Ranieri’s former clubs Leicester and Chelsea on the horizon. Manchester then rock up at Vicarage Road before the hectic December period begins where teams are seemingly playing every 8 hours.

All of this highlights the decision to stick with Ole Gunnar Solskjær until now even more strange. With the last of the international breaks out of the way, any new manager now simply wouldn’t have a good amount of uninterrupted time on the training pitches to bed in some new ideas when the games are coming thick and fast, as they will be now as we enter the winter months of British football.

Does this suggest Ole will remain at the club then for the foreseeable future? Even at the time of writing on Thursday evening, the local press in Manchester are claiming he will be sacked once the replacement is lined up. In Leicester City’s press conference, the favourite for the job, Brendan Rodgers, went to some lengths to distance himself from the United job claiming links were ‘disrespectful’ and he couldn’t comment on something that is ‘not real.’

Reports also emerged that highly sought-after winger Jadon Sancho is now being converted to a wing-back. That players like Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Dean Henderson, Eric Bailly, Alex Telles, Juan Mata and Diogo Dalot were all assured of more game time in the summer than they are currently seeing. With this as the backdrop, and with a mounting injury list to contend with, Ole still has a game to prepare for.

Perhaps a few fringe players being brought in to show the bigger names that their places aren’t guaranteed is just what the side needs? Sitting 18th in the form table, with just 4 points from their last 6 games, they certainly need something!

Watford team news vs Manchester United

Juraj Kucka is ruled out after his sending off for two yellow cards against Arsenal before the international break. Tom Cleverley looks like the favourite to replace him in midfield in partnership with Moussa Sissoko, who has been ever-present since signing from Spurs.

Peter Etebo remains on the long-term injury list having torn a quad muscle towards the end of the Newcastle game. He has had surgery to repair the damage and is expected to be out until around March 2022.

Christian Kabasele is still rehabbing a hamstring injury that has caused him to miss Watford’s last 4 matches.

Ken Sema is expected to be out until December due to an MCL injury sustained in training.

Kwadwo Baah is now also out due to a fractured ankle in training.

Francisco Sierralta is also out again after suffering a reoccurrence of the hamstring injury while on international duty with Chile. He had previously suffered a hamstring injury against Leeds causing him to miss games against Liverpool, Everton and Southampton.

Ozan Tufan has also picked up an injury while away on international duty. Thankfully, the injury isn’t as serious as Sierralta’s, having suffered a knock to the knee. He faces a late fitness test to determine his availability here.

Manchester United team news vs Watford

Paul Pogba (pictured above) is officially serving the last match of his 3-game suspension. Pogba received a straight red card against Liverpool for a two-footed lunge on Naby Keita. However, Pogba suffered a quadriceps strain while hitting a volley during a training drill with the France national team during the break. This could rule him out for up to 2 months even once he has served his 3-game suspension.

Tahith Chong is also on the long-term injury list following groin surgery. He isn’t expected to return to the pitch until at least March 2022.

Raphael Varane remains ruled out for a month with a hamstring injury. The French international was forced off in the first half of the match against Atalanta and has now missed as many matches as he has played since signing for the club.

Edinson Cavani has been suffering from an irritated tendon since pre-season. It flared up again after the Spurs match but is hopeful the international break has provided the opportunity to rest that he required. He faces a fitness test to be involved here.

Scott McTominay is also a doubt having picked up a throat virus. He has likewise been resting and is expected to be involved in some form or another here.

Luke Shaw is one of only three outfield players to have started every league match for United this season, alongside Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Bruno Fernandes. However, having been forced off against City with a head injury and subsequently missing out on England duty due to concussion protocols, it remains to be seen if he can get cleared in time to start here. Alex Telles is waiting to make his first Premier League start of the season if required.
