Southampton vs Manchester City match preview

Will Manchester City pile the pressure onto Arsenal, ahead of the league-leaders trip to Anfield on Easter Sunday?

Last weekend, the Citizens demolished Liverpool 4-1 at the Etihad, running out comfortable winners, despite falling behind in the first half.

JuliĂĄn Álvarez fired home an equaliser, before Kevin De Bruyne, Ä°lkay GĂŒndoğan and then Jack Grealish were all on target after the interval.

That’s now seven wins on the spin for Pep Guardiola’s side, who’ve reached the Champions League quarter-finals and the FA Cup semis during this period.

In the Premier League though, the Sky Blues remain eight points adrift leaders Arsenal, albeit with a game in hand which is at home to generally hapless West Ham.

With Bayern Munich visiting the Etihad on Tuesday, Pep Guardiola’s team will be hoping for a comfortable victory on the South Coast.

Now led by Rubén Sellés, the Saints need points, somewhat cut adrift at the bottom of the table, four points from safety.

The Saints suffered yet another damaging defeat last Sunday, beaten 1-0 at the London Stadium by fellow-strugglers West Ham.

Southampton have now scored just six goals in their last ten outings, half of which came in a draw with Spurs.

Man City have won their last ten meetings with sides bottom of the table, not even conceding a goal in such a fixture since a 2-2 draw with Sunderland on 16 April 2014, almost exactly nine years ago.

An emphatic away victory seems very likely.

Southampton team news

RubĂ©n SellĂ©s has deployed the 4-2-2-2 previously favoured by Ralph HasenhĂŒttl since taking charge.

Here, Carlos Alcaraz could return to stiffen up midfield, alongside RomĂ©o Lavia, who’ll be up against his former club.

With Mohamed Salisu out injured, Jan Bendarek will be partnered by Duje Ćaleta-Car at the back.

Theo Walcott has previously scored five times against Man City, the most-recent of which came six years ago.

With ChĂ© Adams injured, SĂ©kou Mara, who scored in Southampton’s Carabao Cup win over the Sky Blues, will lead the attack.

Predicted XI (4-2-2-2): Bazunu; Walker-Peters, Ćaleta-Car, Bednarek, Perraud; Lavia, Alcaraz, Ward-Prowse, S Armstrong; Walcott, Mara.

Manchester City team news

Pep Guardiola confirmed on Friday that, after missing the win over Liverpool, Erling Braut HĂ„land is fit and raring to go.

Given that the Norwegian has scored eight goals in his last two appearances, this is ominous news for Southampton supporters.

John Stones will continue in this hybrid right-back/midfielder role, with Kyle Walker thereby missing out.

In attack, Jack Grealish earned rave reviews last weekend, so will keep his place on the left-wing.

Predicted XI (4-1-4-1): Ederson; Stones, Dias, Laporte, AkĂ©; Rodri, GĂŒndoğan, Maáž„rez, De Bruyne, Grealish; HĂ„land.
