Betting prediction: Southampton 1 – 1 Leicester City

The Saints welcome Leicester City to St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton on Friday for this Premier League match.

Southampton have the slight upper hand in this head-to-head here, with 5 home wins to Leicester’s 4 in the Premier League.

However, the Foxes have won on each of their last 3 visits to St Mary’s including trashing Southampton 0-9 here last season.

The Saints have just 1 win in their last 6 at home. While only league-leaders Manchester City have won more matches on the road this season than Leicester.

Southampton vs Leicester City: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Southampton 1 – 1 Leicester is available at odds of 7/1.

Southampton’s last home victory over Leicester came back at the start of 2017 by a scoreline of 3-0. A repeat of this score on Friday is available at odds of 40/1.

Leicester’s won 1-0 when these sides met in the FA Cup Semi-Final earlier this month. You can back another 0-1 Foxes win at 8/1.

Recent Southampton vs Leicester matches at St Mary’s have been high scoring with the last 5 all producing over 2.5 goal games; an average of nearly 5 goals per game. You can back another high scoring game here on Friday with odds of 4/5 on for over 2.5 goals.

Kelechi Iheanacho has been on fire lately with 5 goals in his last 4 appearances for Leicester. This includes the opening and ultimately winning goal in the 1-0 win over the Saints in the FA Cup earlier this month. The Nigerian international is 9/2 to score the game’s opener on Friday. Or 11/8 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Southampton.

Southampton vs Leicester City: What are the betting odds?

The Saints have a good home record against Leicester with 15 wins to 6 in all competitions. However, they come into Friday’s match looking to end a 3-game losing run against them at St Mary’s. Odds of 23/10 are available for a Southampton win here.

Leicester have won on each of their last 3 visits to Southampton. They have also beaten them twice already this season at the King Power Stadium. They are the favourites to complete a treble of wins against the Saints in a season at evens.

Only 1 of the last 11 matches at St Mary’s in this head-to-head have ended in stalemate. Odds of 11/4 are available if you see Southampton and Leicester cancelling each other out on Friday.

Southampton vs Leicester City: Match preview

In the history of English football, this head-to-head has a remarkably even record. Their 66 meetings have seen 24 wins apiece and 18 draws.

However, Leicester have enjoyed a period of dominance over the last decade. Southampton have just 4 wins to Leicester’s 10. None more memorable than the 0-9 thrashing the Saints had to endure in front of their own fans here back in October 2019; the last match between them at St Mary’s.

Southampton bounced back from that defeat though and their form over the final 25 games last season would have been enough to secure a Champions League place. Of course, nothing is awarded for performances over 25 games instead of 38 and finding that consistency over a full campaign has been a problem for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side.

This season we saw the same pattern but in reverse, with the Saints form up to mid-December putting them 3rd in the table. Their collapse since then could leave the Southampton board asking questions in the summer if Ralph cannot turn this around.

Since 17 December, the Saints have picked up just 12 points in the Premier League. This is at least 4 points fewer than every other side including Championship-bound Sheffield United. They have scored just 15 goals in 19 games; the 3rd lowest amount in that period of time. Southampton also have conceded the most goals and have the worst goal difference in the Premier League in this period.

Leicester have had to cram in 2 games since Southampton last played and that could give the Saints a slight edge over the Foxes on Friday. We fancy the Saints to squeeze a point out of the game but also wouldn’t be too surprised at all to see Leicester hand out another hammering.

Southampton team news vs Leicester City

Sam McQueen remains on the long-term injury list having suffered a cruciate ligament injury before the season commenced.

William Smallbone is ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury. He likely won’t make a return to the pitch until October.

Oriol Romeu is also ruled out for the rest of the season due to a fractured ankle. The midfielder has had surgery and should be able to return for a full pre-season at the club.

Michael Obafemi underwent surgery to solve an injury problem. He is back in training but Ralph Hasenhüttl believes it’s too early for playing still.

Ryan Bertrand missed the 2-1 defeat to Spurs at the weekend due to a knock. With 9 days between games, Hasenhüttl will be hoping it is enough time for his first-choice left-back to make a return.

Danny Ings only managed 57 minutes of the defeat in London last time out. Fixture congestion was blamed with Ings’ manager stating he struggles to play twice in 3 games resulting in this thigh injury. He is rated as being a major doubt here but is expected back in time to face his former club Liverpool the following weekend.

Leicester City team news vs Southampton

James Justin remains on the long-term injury list. Brendan Rodgers confirmed recently his leg was out of a brace and is on track with his rehab. Regardless, he likely won’t feature again for Leicester in 2021.

Harvey Barnes was originally expected to return from injury before the end of the season. However, Rodgers confirmed recently a setback means he won’t be seen again until the 2021/22 season.

“He’s had a slight setback. He’s just gone in to have a second minor operation. That will rule him out for the rest of the season. The plan is to get him fit for pre-season.”
– Brendan Rodgers, Leicester City Manager

Wes Morgan hasn’t been named in a matchday squad in 2021. His last appearance in the Premier League was a 10-minute cameo at the start of November against Wolves. His lower back injury was originally estimated to rule him out for a few weeks but Rodgers has now confirmed it is tough-and-go if he plays again this season.
